Maybe useful for rendering ? < robust solid NURBS ray tracing>

Tue, 2012/08/07 - 18:02.

After more than six months development, BRL-CAD 7.22.0 is now available! This is a substantial introduction of a new development line encompassing more changes than any prior version since BRL-CAD's release as free open source software. We have robust solid NURBS ray tracing, updated several geometry converters, worked on a new physics simulation system, made several improvements to BRL-CAD's extensive documentation resources, and provide a vastly improved installer for Mac OS X.

I played around with BRL-CAD about 2/3 years ago. A very complicated design interface (everything was command line input) and drawing something as simple as a die (cube with fillets) was quite a lot of work. On top of that it is not parametric which makes it impractical for day-to-day design use on a professional level. Add to that tthe fact that it could export as iges, step, etc.

I'll try it again, but just for the fun of it. For the youngsters in the CAD community it would be great to learn it as it will teach them A LOT about the early developement of CAD programs.

I'm actually swamped with work at the moment. That tank is misleading though. No way was that design in BRL-CAD. You'd need like two years to do it...
