Here's another free screen recorder: http://www.camstudio.org/

I'm not sure how that one stacks up but it seems like it might be pretty good, but I think it makes larger files than Wink. Anyway that's another possibility.

Joe those are fantastic. Thank you.
It is always great to see how others work because you can always learn something from them no matter how large or small.

Looking forward to more tutorials!

Cheers,
Richard

Yep, thanks for the link Pilou, I am planning to try out Wink tonight, also CamStudio looks great. Thanks for the comments everyone, this will help me refine my process because I plan to make quite a few more beginner tutorials now.

Pilou, where did you get that Blueprint? I would love to use it.

After looking at those resources and researching a little more I think I will do an additional tutorial creating a column based on the Doric Order references. I also found some nice ideas for doors.

In the end though the temple I am creating is fantasy based for a scene I have in mind. I will also be using it to experiment with MoI's ngon output for normal-mapping video game assets. Game, TV, and Movie assets are my primary interest.

No Render here! : it's just the inverse of the screen of Moi :)
@Michael
Something curious in Moi with only the follow Image + one Baluster + one guardrail of 20 balusters
(on the image there are three but it's a collage for the 2 bottom)
moving all (Rot, move etc...) is some hard (slowly) !
all snap object disable)
Is the fact to stay in the same session and continue to move rotate etc...make the "undo" more and more heavy (in memory) and result a slowdown speed?

I link (bottom post) 1 baluster + "up guardrail" piece : is that the same for you?

here you can load the initial file + image : 800 kb zipped

Hi Pilou, thanks for reporting this. Yes, I can repeat the same problem over here, it appears to be caused by a large spike in memory use while you are doing a transform command.

I'll take a closer look...

Hi Pilou, this was a pretty bad bug, I have fixed it for the next beta.

It was partially related to undo - basically there were a lot of extra copies of objects that were taking up a lot of memory until you completed the transform command. With smaller objects this wasn't too noticable, but on a larger set of objects this could eat up quite a lot of memory and once enough memory is used so that you start swapping to disk, that usually slows things down quite a lot.

This is fixed in the next beta so that transform commands will not drain excess memory like this anymore.

Thanks for reporting this!

:) I have always found that Moi has some difficulties speed with numerous objects :)
So happy that is resolved :)

Another question :)
In Google Sketchup when you "dupplicate" (or copy) an "objet component" (or an object "grouped") (say a box B) the result file size B + B is less than a simple box A + a simple box A
So when you have numerous same object's components or grouped : file is magically very small :)
example: a box B (grouped) * 100 = 44 kb
a simple box * 100 = 132 kb
Is it possible in Moi?

Hi Pilou

Some programs also call this type of thing "instances".

> Is it possible in Moi?

No, it won't be possible for the V1 version of MoI, but I would like to add instancing into a future version.

I agree, instances would be very useful for large scenes. I think because Pilou and I are looking at MoI as an environment modeling tool as well, a feature like that would be nice. First though, I think a heirarchy/grouping system wold be best so we could manage multiple objects better.

Also, I just want to update everyone. I merged the whole video into one quicktime video. I plan to provide both a flash video and higher quality quicktime version of each of the tutorials I am planning to do. I finally figured how to get a decent sized quicktime video, 800x600, at a decent file size, about 1.1MB per minute with everything being hosted for free through blip.tv and Google services. Now I just need to get my mic back from a friend so I can record voice. This weekend I hope to finish up and post another video.

Eventually I want to record the process of rendering everything with Mental Ray as well as converting the models into normal-mapped real-time geometry for export into an engine like Visual3D.Net, Quest3D, or Deep Creator.

This is indeed a very good tutorial. I did a column this evening using a similar technique. The new column I created is tapered and I used projected curves as rails to create solids to boolean out indentations and create fluted shafts. I figure it would be nice to introduce projected curves and booleans in my next video.

The capital represented in the tutorial you linked is very nice. I may attempt to re-create it tomorrow. Thanks again!

Thanks for the link Pilou!
I've learned quite a bit from this thread. Thanks to all.

Here is a quick one I did based on the pdf. It's not accurate and I took some artistic license but I like the results.

Yep, I've learned a lot from this thread as well. Very nice column capital you've built. I'm looking forward to attempting to model one myself.
