Video Tutorial: Temple Column

Hi everyone, I started to make some video tutorials for friends to introduce them to MoI and am trying to figure out a way to share them with everyone. For now I do not have a personal website, so I am using free services to host the videos. I started a blog that will be dedicated to distributing the tutorials I create. You can check them out here and give me feedback, thanks.

I'm still trying to figure out the best way to distribute tutorial videos. The blog itself was just made, so I haven't had the time to design it much beyond making the initial post and setting some colors quickly. If anyone has any ideas for where I can host the videos in a better quality please let me know. My current host has many restrictions and I don't plan on purchasing webspace until my portfolio and demoreel are complete, end of the year maybe.

Hi Joe, these look really cool!

I could host them on the server that runs Moi3d.com and this forum, if you like. I guess it should be fine - maybe they shouldn't be too tremendously large though.

Thanks, if people find them useful I can send you better quality versions to host, maybe with voiceover too. Right now my host automatically converts them into a really compressed flash video. I think viewers will still be able to see what is going on, but feedback will tell.

Cool :)
What is the system of reccording? (the yellow cursor)
About column
Is there a classic forms or pure fantasy measures & form?

@Michael
About fillets : does Moi support many copy of objects with fillets (here fillet's columns) without slowdown decrease speed display?
(how many copy of objects can be reasonable to make)
Can Moi support a greek temple with all fillet of any stones of it or must be separate in some parts?

It is pure fantasy based on internet images I found. It is meant to be a really basic 8 foot tall column. Since I only do entertainment stuff it is more about a look than accuracy. I know most MoI users are probably MCAD pros who rely on accuracy, but my friends and I are studying more for the videogame and film industry. Some of them use Maya Nurbs for environments, which is what is taught at Academy of Arts San Francisco, so I want to show them MoI as an alternative.

Also, I found a better video host, blip.tv, which will allow me to provide a compressed flash preview along with access to my full size .wmv or .mov file. I will probably edit the video into one single file with voiceover this week and continue with the creation of the temple door.

The file was recorded using the Camtasia Studio 30 day trial I downloaded this weekend. It is very cool, but I will probably switch to a free option like FRAPS along with some free editing tools. It's just too expensive for me right now, I need to save for MoI ;D

Hi Pilou, well each fillet adds additional surface and complexity. It is not possible to add more surfaces and not decrease speed - as you add more surfaces, display speed will gradually decrease.

> (how many copy of objects can be reasonable to make)

It is difficult to determine an exact number, because it depends a lot on the speed of your machine. If you have a faster machine and video card, and plenty of memory, that will help out a lot and let you have more objects. A slower machine will only handle fewer objects.

The other thing you can do is to reduce the mesh density under Options - putting in a surface and trim curve angle of something like 25 degrees (instead of the default 10) will make a rougher display but which also will contain fewer polygons and help with display speed.

The default density is set to rather high to provide a very nice quality smooth display, but this can be bad for speed if you have a large quantity of objects.

> Can Moi support a greek temple with all fillet of any stones of it or must be separate in some parts?

I think it would be necessary to do it in separate parts. But I guess it depends on the temple, I suppose that some of them don't have too many columns.

Here's another free screen recorder: http://www.camstudio.org/

I'm not sure how that one stacks up but it seems like it might be pretty good, but I think it makes larger files than Wink. Anyway that's another possibility.

Joe those are fantastic. Thank you.
It is always great to see how others work because you can always learn something from them no matter how large or small.

Looking forward to more tutorials!

Cheers,
Richard

Yep, thanks for the link Pilou, I am planning to try out Wink tonight, also CamStudio looks great. Thanks for the comments everyone, this will help me refine my process because I plan to make quite a few more beginner tutorials now.

Pilou, where did you get that Blueprint? I would love to use it.

After looking at those resources and researching a little more I think I will do an additional tutorial creating a column based on the Doric Order references. I also found some nice ideas for doors.

In the end though the temple I am creating is fantasy based for a scene I have in mind. I will also be using it to experiment with MoI's ngon output for normal-mapping video game assets. Game, TV, and Movie assets are my primary interest.

No Render here! : it's just the inverse of the screen of Moi :)
@Michael
Something curious in Moi with only the follow Image + one Baluster + one guardrail of 20 balusters
(on the image there are three but it's a collage for the 2 bottom)
moving all (Rot, move etc...) is some hard (slowly) !
all snap object disable)
Is the fact to stay in the same session and continue to move rotate etc...make the "undo" more and more heavy (in memory) and result a slowdown speed?

I link (bottom post) 1 baluster + "up guardrail" piece : is that the same for you?

here you can load the initial file + image : 800 kb zipped

Hi Pilou, thanks for reporting this. Yes, I can repeat the same problem over here, it appears to be caused by a large spike in memory use while you are doing a transform command.

I'll take a closer look...
