This looks promising http://www.geometrysystems.net/default.htm

I need to get an evaluation copy to see if it actually works as well as my interpretation of their marketing info leads me to believe.

hmm... This copied from the News section of their website :

"...Please visit GSI in booth #1643 at SIGRAPH 2003 in San Diego..."

Not sure I'd hold my breath for that demo! :P

Yes I did see GSI's site needs some major updating. It doesn't give you a warm fuzzy about the company when their website info is nearly 10 years out of date.

I also wonder that if the product was really good, I would have heard about it more often. I only found them through a search rather than anyone's recommendation.

But it may be worth a look.

The attached image shows a Silo Base Man mesh exported from Modo Power SubD-NURBS with default settings
as a 3DM file and opened in MoI. This gives an idea of the default patch creation, which can be modified by the
use of materials in Modo.

FYI: The MoI file is approx. 14 MB., the original OBJ export from Silo was about 125 KB. ;)

I've been wanting to get a basic male/female body into moi :) I know MoI not suited for organic stuff, if I could find a program around the same cost has MoI (or cheaper) where I could do the organic stuff then bring it into MoI to finish off, I'll be happy.

I'm find programs like Hexagon to hard to drive then can't import the results into MoI anyway.. I even tried importing a mesh into MoI and manually create surfaces for every triangle, gave up after adding the surfaces to 1/2 a hand :)

I find it interesting to see the patches created in the conversion process. I guess you could
maybe simplify the hands and use a human figure with a screen capture in MoI as a size
reference but most of the time you would be round tripping to a poly program to render anyway.
Might be handy if you have a program like Viacad Pro etc. that renders NURBS.

I think this process works best with fairly simple SDS shapes that you add hard surface details to
and mesh to export.

An old program Amapi can transform a polygon mesh in nurbs mesh acceptable by Moi
http://moi3d.com/forum/messages.php?webtag=MOI&msg=5090.1
Alas this program is not more released
Try to find the version amapi 7.52 if you can

Number of polys is maybe be 1 000 - 2 000 I have a very old computer so...
you can send me a file i f you want that i try to transform the mesh for you ;)

From what i see from the Danperk example : Amapi keeps the same number of "patch"

Hi Pilou,

I'll send you some test files if you dont mind, I'm really curious to see how amapi resolve patch continuity, especially on high valence area.
Power SubD-NURBS comes with 4 quality settings, 'fine' and 'very fine' is doing a really good job in that area.

Is it still possible to legaly download amapi somewhere (pc) ? I only find 'pirate' version :S

Best regards
Stefan

No sorry we can't find legal version of Amapi somewhere except if someone want to resell it
Version 6 was not make the conversion and not be more available at Polyloop

@PAQ you can send me anything you want by PM (with something like yousend it, mediafire etc )
but take objects with little number of polygons < 1 000 , not a Zbrush file, my computer is 10 years old! :)

Hi Frenchy,
I dont think it will do the same type of conversion you are seeing there with power-sub-d... It will do the ol'e "convert each poly to a planar NURBS patch" conversion.. The power sub-d and newer stuff actually does a "fitting process" that creates a whole, new smooth nurbs surface.

@ Burr
Yes for the simple conversion: each polygons will be a surface patch: so a planar face will be a planr nurbs surface

Not sure for the second method: there is a choice of the ranks of smooth

Better if your polygon model is only quads!
But works also with 3 facets or more than 4 facets: but you have less rank of smooth

I think the ability to create patch boundaries by material in Modo is a nice feature.
It allows some control of patch placement.

Image shows original converted face patch on right, rebuilt(simplified) curves in middle
and new patch (right) with some point pulling applied.

Here an example by Beta Amapi 8 that beta testers have (never released) I have not :(
Polys to nurbs

Top smooth Poly CatmullClark --> Nurbs
Bottom Nurbs (Yellow Brep nurbs limit) <-- Polygons

Hexagon 2.5 is there too and it is free.

http://www.daz3d.com/i/3d-models/purchase-hexagon/hexagon-2-5?item=4222&cat=339&_m=d

I have no idea what features people need but maybe it will help with some of the importing and exporting issues people are having as well.

I have not played with it myself but the videos on youtube are pretty good WHEN you get the right clips of course. Some peeps post videos that are not that great with it.

Hexagon is a French very cool modeler made by the same Amapi team , very similar for polygon modeler part
But there is not function for transfom polygon mesh in nurbs!
You can see some tutorial videos here

Yeah I've Hexagon as well. Played with it a long time ago. Perhaps I need to reinstall it again and play with it again.
I don't know how the modeling tools compare to C4D but it can't be much worse/old fashioned than C4D.

Peace,
Rich_Art. ;-)
