Import

Hi All,

I used the search option but I could not find it. (forum search engines and I is not a good couple)

Why is it not possible to import an OBJ file? is this because the Moi code can't handle OBJ files?
Sometimes it would be handy to import an OBJ file for adding things or use as a ref object.

Peace,
Rich_Art. ;-)

Basically convert from NURBS (MoI) to Mesh (obj) is possible, but the inverse way is very hard to do.

Hi Rich,

please check my signature for this topic. I used a triangle mesh as example. You can use the NURBS Surface option provided in Houdini if you have a quad mesh for example. If the mesh consists of tris and quads you may have to check what fits best for you.

Best regards
Stefan

Hi Rich_Art - yeah it's because OBJ files usually contain polygon mesh geometry which is a totally different way to structure 3D objects than the NURBS geometry that MoI is focused on working with.

MoI can export to polygons in OBJ format, which it does by taking large spline surfaces and dicing them up into little facet pieces. But it is not easy to start with a whole lot of little diced up pieces and then try to form large truly smooth surfaces out of those.

See here for some previous discussion:

Thanks guys... I will read everything. :-)
The problem with this community is, when I click a link to another post or topic I see more interesting things and so on.. Before I know I have 20 tabs open in Firefox. :-) and I want to test all the tips etc..
Am I the only one? Glad I have some free/spare time in my daily job as an IT field support engineer to try and test all the tips.

Thanks again guys...

Peace,
Rich_Art. ;-)

You mean the wireframe converter utility program? No - I currently only have a windows version of that helper program.
