Hi kailash,

I did a quick test with Silo and it comes into there as 3 separate objects all named the same.

If you open up the file in a text editor you can see that there are 3 different places in the file that begin a new object with a "g" and "o" statement like this:

o box
g box

That's how you can verify by looking at the file itself that it is made up of 3 separate objects (each with the same name) and not just one big combined object. But it's up to whatever program you are importing into to decide what to do when it sees several objects in the file with the same name - it looks like Cinema4D decides to combine them into one object in that case.

Also a lot of mesh modeling programs will have some function in them to break apart polygons that are in separate non touching chunks into separate objects.

In Cinema4D try selecting your combined object and then use the "Explode segments" command, in V10 it's on the menu under Structure > Edit Spline > Explode segments. After doing that it results in 3 separate sub-objects under the box so that may help you.

Be sure to name the objects, you want to be separate objects, with an unique name or do not use the object naming at all.

If you have two separate objects and those objects do have the same name eg they are in the same group. C4D will import them as 1 object.

I guess, the only way to do, is like Rich_Art said: rename the objects.
Cause when I explode the polymesh group, the normal tag is not correct anymore, that means the shading is unusable....

You also can use FBX for export-import. This is a file format C4D can handle very good as well. (more options)

Thank you for all your help.
For now I decided to "unname" all the objects I'd like to be separate, before I export the data. This way I get single objects..
I still prefer the obj to fbx as the surface (normal-tag) and polygone structure in the obj is very clean compared to other formats.

Greetings
Kailash

Have you tried setting styles for the named objects?

There's also a different OBJ importer available for Cinema4D called Riptide here:

http://skinprops.com/riptide.php

It doesn't seem to split these objects with the same name up either though, but it will also import materials from OBJ files so when using the Riptide plugin for doing the import style colors that you assigned in MoI come through into C4D.

Yeah Riptide is the plugin to go for indeed. I used to use the free version but that one does not work with the latest version of C4D.
But for a little amount of money you can buy the pro version. Highly recommended by me.

I still use the "object name separator" script Michael wrote here:

http://moi3d.com/forum/messages.php?webtag=MOI&msg=3114.1

The script is in post #5 and you need to have your object boolean unioned and
other elements of the object can be isolated with styles.

If you leave your objects unnamed, they will also get auto numbered at export time with names like object1 object2 object3, etc... for each different object.
