There's also a different OBJ importer available for Cinema4D called Riptide here:

It doesn't seem to split these objects with the same name up either though, but it will also import materials from OBJ files so when using the Riptide plugin for doing the import style colors that you assigned in MoI come through into C4D.

Yeah Riptide is the plugin to go for indeed. I used to use the free version but that one does not work with the latest version of C4D.
But for a little amount of money you can buy the pro version. Highly recommended by me.

I still use the "object name separator" script Michael wrote here:

The script is in post #5 and you need to have your object boolean unioned and
other elements of the object can be isolated with styles.

If you leave your objects unnamed, they will also get auto numbered at export time with names like object1 object2 object3, etc... for each different object.
