Record and Playback modeling process

Hello Micheal,
Will it be a big task to implement a way of recording and playing back a modeling session (sort of like z scripts in zbrush?)

Its also serves as a good way of recovering earlier stages of work and is usually more reliable than undo's

thanks

Hi Isaac, this will be a big task. I would like to do it at some point, but it will be a while before I will be able to get to it.

I have some related ideas that I would like to explore at some point, of some ways to manage sort of different version streams of a model.

Session playback seems like tricky thing. I work a lot with a parametric modeling program (still in Beta) called GenerativeComponents by Bentley Systems. Instead of having a compiled model file at the end of the session, everything is saved as a text file. Each time a project file is opened in the application, it is read by the application and rebuilt in the Model view as well as in a relational graph. Overall the application uses a hybrid of scripting and direct manipulation techniques to create parametric dependencies. The results can be remarkable but it does require the user to be incredibly rigorous along the way with management of the model's elements...sort of the opposite of Moi.

clarification: opposite in the sense that you don't have to be as rigorous with setting up the model in Moi...of course you can also get remarkable results with Moi.. ;)

Excellent idea
Record and Playback of modeling sessions would be great for tutorials ! Tutorial ZScripts were extremely handy when I discovered ZBrush

Sort of - but it is only a snapshot of just the program state while it is in the current action, not of a whole sequence of actions.

Good to know it will be a feature in the future.
I always wondered why most programs dont have that capability as zbrush.
Most like maya and xsi have a script editor that will record your actions as scripts. and will actually allow you to select snippets of that recorded script and run them to redo most tasks but don't seem to have the full flexibility a zbrush.
I usually use this method to redo some modeling that i would otherwise do multiple times or use a duplication method.
eg. i can create a circle and say duplicate it, loft between the duplicates etc. then all i need to do to recreate a similar model is to just draw a circle and run the script generated fron the first session to recreate the model... saves a bunch of time sometimes.

will be looking foward to this in toe future.

cheers!
