Pineapple

this is a case were a repetitive pattern can be tileable and flowed. It's very difficult to draw a pineapple's pattern because dipend by the age of it,and the shape is not regular.Could be pentagonal ,exagonal, flat or bumpy or not tileable by software at all.So i decided for an arrangement:

Pattern is made by 3 components: brown is an exagonal loft trunkated in the middle, green are 3 networks joined and the little central leave network too.
after copying,i made a different orientation for the little leave to obtain a random shape and give some more casuality

now flow surface target:to prevent compression on the poles i revolved just a piece of curve,on the top will be the leaves group but now i need just half pineapple

all stuff is on XY plane (like Michael told answering me in the -STRAW TO DRINK- post )

this is the first top part.I flowed brown, green and little leaves not simultaneously but 3 times, one for each group

bottom part

I waited lot of time when flowed GREEN part.i Rebuilt curves before network them and after flowed they become HEAVY

I tried to open all 4 flowed parts but the last didn't shown completely

I have Win 7 Professional 64 bit and 8 Giga ram DDR2,GTX 460 1Giga video memory but slow down dipended by file size:see below...

then export in C4D one by one, i choose each of four parts =60.000 polygons

So 330 MB filesize...i think times are ready to implementing an istance system in Moi instead of improve CPU core's usage. In my case i have to model the leaves group separately...too heavy !
I'm sure that Moi is not only a nurbs modeler for simple mechanical pieces or few network surfaces. V-2 bring a layer system with it,basically to manage many parts,so now an istancing or something else to draw and manage a lot of stuff.Any way you'll choose Michael will bring benefits to us.

OK guys:summer is gone but in my virtual world never end:let's go party!!

Cheers:Mauro

The pineapple looks nice but I would just use a good Disp map. Cinema4D has a good Subpolygon displacement. :-)

Peace,
Rich_Art. ;-)

Wow! Huge effort Mauro!
Funny though, when I saw the first picture I thought, this doesn't look like a pineapple, then realisation set in as I scrolled down :)
Nice modeling and cool renders, nothing special to Burr, it's probably what his backyard looks like ;)

Cheers
~Danny~

Hi Mauro, wow it looks great!

You may get some better results for high complexity models if you reduce the display mesh density to be coarser - that can help to reduce memory consumption by quite a bit.

Some details for that in this previous post:
http://moi3d.com/forum/index.php?webtag=MOI&msg=4196.2

The settings for that are under Options > View > Meshing parameters - try setting "Mesh angle" to 25 degrees and uncheck "Add detail to inflections". That may reduce memory load a fair amount.

re: Instances - I do want to work on adding instances into MoI but even when they are added it probably won't help in a case like you are working on here where every single copied object is being deformed a little differently so they're no longer actually all direct copies of the same shape. An instance will be able to be transformed by moving, rotating, or scaling of its base shape, but something that dramatically changes the object like flow probably won't work for instances. That's because the deformed object can't really be displayed properly without doing the whole flow calculation, and as you already have seen it's an intensive calculation and would not be suitable for doing dynamically on every screen redraw.

Although I guess you have some kind of rotational symmetry there actually so I suppose it could be a fit if you did something like flow one row and then copied it or something like that. If that works you could probably do that now to avoid a longer flow calculation.

Peace to you,Rich
this is a quick render just to complet my post

I don't care C4D render engine for shots, just for animations

talking about render i say it's possible to use just the solid flat pineapple surface without patterns, make a seamless diffuse color texture, then a normal map for little details and carefully a displace map for displacing the large details.Unbiased render engines (MAXWELL and FRYRENDER,that i use, have an advanced MICRO POLY DISPLACEMENT SYSTEM,that do much more better than Advanced Render module.
I want to catch the light and the feeling of an image like unbiased engines always give
no cheats or tricks, photon mapping, final gathers, samples, parameters, quasimontecarlo or not, biased more or less

Summer is still here

Ok no problem. I use Vray instead of the build C4D engine. Although R13 has a nifty physical renderer now.

Peace,
Rich_Art. ;-)

i talk about row:just flow a single pattern so is deformed in both UV directions,to obtain this i flow first the complete serie of patterns like i did, then erase all except one,and make istances from this one
copy and past istances or distribute them by circular array,so i have my first row of patterns then repeat to the second row and so...

-----------------------------

I said my opinion about render engines
i'm a supporter of unbiased, like i told, but actually most used absolutely is VRAY just like compromising speed and quality
here in the gallery section you can see nice renders made by minor engines..but are really nice !
Everyone take a part of him in the image he made, someone like minimalist and clear style, like Rich,i like colorful and lightful reflections and caustics
same thing drawing, people like abstract or weapons, cars or jewelry...freedom !
