How to make this indent

I all,

What is the best method to make the indents as seen on the image? I tried to project a curve on the bottle cap and loft it so I can extrude it but I can't get it right.

Hi Rich_Art - probably you would not want to use Extrude since that punches things out only in one direction. If you want something that kind of hugs the surface contour and goes out along the surface normal in all directions instead of only one direction then Shell or Offset is the kind of operation to produce that result.

However, instead of using project it may be easier for that case to build a flat pattern and then use the new Flow command in v3 for producing the final result - see here for an example of how that works:

Flow did the trick. I just made a quick test in an empty scene and it works with flow.

Looks good already! :)

Yeah when you have something that looks like a pattern that is wrapped around the other shape the new Flow command tends to be good for constructing that type of stuff.

That lets you focus on building the initial pattern just on a flat plane which is usually a lot easier.

Ok next problem.

I try to boolean this to 1 object but it keeps calculating after 15min I did stop the calculation.
any Idea??

If I delete one of the outer surfaces, you can see that the inside of the pieces you are trying to boolean have a kind of barely skimming overlapping surface area:



Those kinds of barely skimming overlaps between the pieces being booleaned can add a lot of complexity to the boolean calculation, because the boolean code is going to try and intersect those 2 barely skimming surfaces together, and if one is just bumping up and down through the other one by a tiny amount that can make for a whole lot of complex intersection curves between those objects.

So just in general surface overlap like that is a much more difficult boolean to handle. If you want to boolean together 2 pieces like that, it's better to create the indented piece to be sunken down a little bit into the other object, sort of pushing through it by a small distance instead of having 2 surfaces just barely skimming along each other.

Thanks Michael. That makes sense indeed. It is just with regular 3D Apps. 2 polygons occupying the same space is a no go.

I'll adapt the thickness of the object and try the boolean again.

It worked good....I even managed to add a little bevel. Took some calculation time but that is ok.
See image. Now back to C4D and render out an image again. :-)

A more traditional way of making a nurbs object like this is to create only one segment. Then circular array it. Join them all together.
