A time ago, Mark Brown noticed that DirectX emulation under VirtualBox wasn mature enough for MoI. **

Also, is dificult run MoI under WINE or similar.

¿Any idea for a poor newbie linux user?

0:-)

**I write this post after I came the same conclusion that Mark....with VirtualBox 4.0.8 and Guest Addition 4.0.4

That was a while ago, so it could be worth a check to see if it has improved very much since then. (EDIT: oops I see you did already)

I think you have to manually enable the Direct3D support in it or something like that though, it's not enabled by default and MoI will need Direct3D support for its display.

Yeah this doesn't work very well right now - first you have to use some of the winetricks methods to install Internet Explorer and after that it is still kind of flaky.

I'm hoping that MoI v3 will be more friendly for running under WINE, but I'm not sure yet exactly how that will work out.

You might try VMWare - I think that they have a Linux version and on their Mac version at least their Direct3D support is good enough to run MoI there.

Thanky you Michael.

Virtualbox has a experimental simulation of directx. (I think that it is of v9.0)

The thing is that I see any users in the forums that can play games (i don't play videogames) and I think that is most dificult to play any last generation videogame in virtualbox that run MoI.

The graphics windows are opened, but they are flashing and then it is imposible to use.

Well, wat do you mean when you say that MoI 3.0 will be easiest to use under WINE? I have hear that you want to unlink completely of MS Explorer. And...anything else (directX/opengl or something like that)?

Thank you

David

Hi David,

Yeah - one big change for MoI v3 is that it is no longer based off of the mshtml engine - being based off of that engine was a further difficulty for WINE because WINE only has a barely functional mshtml replacement implementation in it.

But I'm still not sure yet how well WINE handles the remaining Win API areas that MoI v3 will still be using.

No, v3 is still going to use Direct3D - so I am hoping that WINE's built in Direct3D translation layer will work well enough to do the job. That's one of the things that I'm not sure about yet.

In the future at some point I'd like to have an option to use OpenGL instead of Direct3D but that is not likely to happen in the v3 timeframe.

See this previous thread for some other discussion:
