you can try with Google sketchup, but EPS and PDF export format are not in the Free version!

Hi Pilou,

Since SketchUp doesn't have real curves in it, most likely the EPS and PDF export from the SketchUp Pro version will only contain vectors made up of line segments and not smooth curves.

That might work fine for many other kinds of uses, but if you read some of the messages earlier in this thread, he was looking for smooth curve output.

Hello,

SU generates a bunch of line segments to make up curves. Before I was told about MoI I used SU Pro, and it was virtually impossible to reuse any image, especially if wanting to zoom in on a part to show detail.

Hi,

An outline would be interesting, although not important if it's difficult to do.

Having continuous edges joined would be interesting .
In the example Ostexo provided, the line (in red) is segmented in small arcs.

I do a lot of those type of illustrations, I'll try to dig out some also.
But the example provided by Ostexo is a good one, it shows how images are constructed in a general fashion.

Also preserving the color of objects in the AI export would be quite handy.

"""Thanks for the recommendations. Rhino created decent curves but some of the detail was highly distorted. Spaceclaim makes some nice 3D PDF's but I'm not sure if I can do a 2D one. I think I just need to slog through it and be patient for MoI3 :)"""

Hi Ostexo, yeah It's true that rhino does not always make a 100% job and garbles some curve now and then but in most of cases it's quite good.
I some cases I will simply redraw a 2d curve in Moi over the flattened version.

Out of curiosity, which vector application do you use?

Hi Marc,

Yeah if you have a couple of examples where you can send me both the final 2D illustration and also the original 3D model, that would help me for testing when I get to work on this area.

Thanks,
- Michael

Hello,

I use CorelDRAW for the cleanup work. The virtual segment delete tool does a good job and saves me some time. I'm not sure Illustrator has a tool that is similar, I'm all for paring down the toolbox.

Yeah, CorelDraw seems great, I haven't tried it.

Xara is my favorite at the moment, the render engine is really fast and has no problem zooming with a high number of items, especially when grouped.
The interface is streamlined and unobtrusive, the overall ease of use easily outweighs it's shortcomings.

I also use illustrator (mainly not by choice) and although it can do impressive amount of stuff and be handy at times, I find it slow, cumbersome and unintuitive.
Functions are less than optimized and often redundant.
I think illustrator's installer is somewhere around 1.5gb!

One thing that used to drive me crazy with Illustrator was that you had to click almost exactly on the little tiny nodes to drag them around, it was really easy to miss them. Is that something that's gotten better in it over time?

Oh! Of course they've addressed this, you now have the choice between 1 and 1.5 pixel wide nodes. ;-)

:) It wouldn't be so bad if they were only displayed as tiny things, it's more that they're also so tiny when it comes to targeting them with the mouse as well, that's the part that drove me crazy.

No it's no as bad now, there's an user-adjustable selection tolerance.

Hello,

How do you like Xara? I thought that was mainly a raster graphics package? How advanced are the radiant fills? It would be nice to be able to onionskin a raster file from MoI and easily scale out a fill mesh to get it close.

I've always thought Xara was more focused on vector drawing. It's pretty nice - just kind of generally slick and nice UI. Definitely worth checking out at least.

Hi Ostexo

I often stack raster screenshots from Moi and use it as a quick base for the illustration.
A simple example:

There are numerous not so obvious small workflow details that make Xara real efficient on day to day use.

I find a general behavior consistency across many type of functions, for example the gradient and transparency tool are very much alike.

The fast real-time dragging aspects of many tools; gradients, feathering, transparencies is awesome .
You can apply transparency to individual objects, group them and apply another transparency level to the whole group and repeat this as many times you like..

Other cool details I can think of that I find quite usefull:

Toggle "selection tool/last tool used" with the spacebar (Option)

Falloff profiles on gradients, transparencies and feathering.

Boolean operations that works with bitmaps and vector objects, also on groups as whole

mouse operations:

Right-Click + Drag to copy
Ctrl-Click to select inside groups
Alt-Click to select under objects
Swatches: Left click = fill color, Right-Click = line color (Preference)

Nudge feature (arrows) with alt/shift/ctrl combinations modifiers to apply different increments sizes.

You can set a hotkey that sends a bitmap directly in a external editor (photoshop for example) that updates it when you return.
