This also was my first thought. The illusion of 3D on a 2D picture comes with the play of light and shadow.

You can give a style a very dark but not quite totally black color to make it display on screen as black.

So for example set the style's color to something like rgb = 1,1,1

That will then shade as a very dark black color instead of shading as white.

The default black style with rgb = 0,0,0 displays wires (curves and edges) as black but will display shaded surfaces as white.
