Thanks everyone! I don't like the cast aluminum material in max, but the render will come soon as I get that worked out. The knurling on the muffler was hell. It looks cool, like the real thing, but the booleans were so complicated MoI was having a very hard time with them, failed many times, and the file size doubled just from that. I found out later there is a material in max with the knurling as a texture... :-|

Alibre doesn't like any import of this file so Keyshot is out for now :-( (I might have to do individual parts and then assemble them).

I guess it didn't like the stand... weird...

Fusion imported the *.stp no problem, I then re-exported to *.stp and Alibre opened that without the stand.

And now... the renders!

I think this is my favorite shot.

What are you rendering with? Try a non reflective alloy for the body. It looks a bit odd in white.

Keyshot. The lighting/color might be a little bright, but it is very close to the actual material. Some sort of cast aluminum (investment cast?). Of course the engine I have on hand is a little dirty...

Keyshot's biggest downfall: lack of materials and/or types of materials. It's been a PITA finding something that looked right for this cast aluminum.

I wish I knew max better, so I'm working on it, but right now I can't match the keyshot output. I know max can, but I don't know how.
I'm new to this whole rendering thing... cut me some slack, eh... ;-)

Hi Nick
Overall I think it is a beautiful job.
I have been doing renderings for years (not for publication but to give my clients some idea of the finished product) and would settle for considerably less quality than you got here. Getting perfection in renderings is a specialty in itself.
cheers,
eric

Hi Nick

Model looks great, in Keyshot you should take a look at the gamma for the HDRI, it can make a huge difference and will help avoid the blow out to white you are getting on the metal elements. In the Keyshot forum look up renders by Cholton and you can see some good examples of cast metal parts. Gamma is essentially the contrast of the HDRI sometimes it is way to high blows out the subtlety.

Have you posted it at the keyshot forum, probably some good advice on offer there?

Regards

Jamie
