FR: Image options with context menu (aka right click in other apps)?

I'd like to suggest a feature that we can get a context menu for image manipulation, specifical turn it on/off, set transparency. Returning to the menu can be a pain in workflow.

In fact, really a context menu in general would be great for more areas of modeling.

Hi Jason - you mean by right-clicking somewhere inside a background image inside the viewport, even though you were not in the Image command?

The problem I can see with that is that right-click is already used for some other tasks, it's an alias for pushing the "Done" button while you are in a command, and for repeating the last command when in selection mode.

Background images tend to take up a lot of area in the viewport, so if they responded to every right-click it could then make it difficult to find an empty area to do a right click for "Done" or "repeat last command"...

If you find yourself wanting to tweak images a lot, you could set up a keyboard shortcut that will launch the image command - for that put in the command name: Image in for the command part of the shortcut key.

Michael,

I'm not suggesting replacing the RMB. But let's say I select a curve, and hit a key command to pull up a context menu, and from there I could select options for extrude, show points, etc rather than always going to the sidebar.

The background image just tweaked me onto this because I have many images at once open and it'd be great to select it somehow and adjust transparency on the fly or resize it, etc.

I think the context sensitive menu thing is best for the features and their editing though.

So you mean having every possible thing that you could do to the curve be on a pop-up menu?

The issue with that is that the popup would be huge, it would be kind of like having the whole side pane pop up right in the middle of your screen.

It's kind of a general design guideline for MoI to try and keep the modeling area free of things that get in your way from seeing the actual model - by putting the UI on the side pane it tends to help keep stuff from cluttering up the actual model view.

One thing that could be good in the future though would be to have an option for some kind of customizable pop-up which you could then populate with just the particular commands that you liked to use the most often. That would keep it a lot more in control than trying to put every possible action on a popup. Would this kind of a thing handle what you were thinking of here?

Yes Michael. I didn't mean to suggest every single option be available. The concept of the most popular commands is quite typical in a lot of packages.

Not related, but Cinema 4D and Maya employ the 'hotbox'. In C4D you press 'V' to open the context menu or command menu that is right at the mouse and it's like navigating the menus.

Sorry, you'll have to educate me on that one. I'm afraid I'm not the most regular visitor.

Hi Jason, re: plug-in gallery, see here for some links:
http://kyticka.webzdarma.cz/3d/moi/#PluginGallery

It is possible to set up quite a bit of custom UI in MoI currently but you have to edit some HTML files to make it work. The plug-in gallery is one example of setting up a custom HTML dialog that has some particular commands on it.

In the future I'm planning on having an easier way to manipulate the UI though.
