MoI textures?

Hi Bill, no currently MoI does not support textures. So if you use that sequence of loading the Rhino file into MoI and then saving from MoI to go into Modo, the textures will be lost during that process.

To avoid this you probably want to apply the textures inside of Modo rather than applying them inside of Rhino.

Hi Michael,
I actually started my models as Picture frames in Rhino then split and extruded them into models retaining the images as a textures. It was quick and easy for what I was modeling. Do the texture coordinates transfer from Rhino to MoI to MoI's lwo (modo) export?

I just tried exporting my model from MoI to lwo to try and answer my own question. My layer names in Rhino reflected the image names. The layer names opened in MoI as Styles names, but when I opened up the MoI lwo export file in modo the objects are listed as "object" followed by what appears to be a random numbers. Is there a way to export the objects so that they are grouped by style and retain the style name?

Thanks for the quick response,
Bill

Hi Bill,

They do, because those texture coordinates come from some data that is inherent in the NURBS surfaces themselves, they're not extra properties kind of tacked on to the objects like a texture definition is.

But you may run into an issue where MoI creates texture coordinates using a tight-fitting surface, shrunken down to fit its trimming boundaries.

Those are object names that you are seeing in that case. If you have not assigned the object a name (note that the object name is a distinct different name than a layer name that an object can belong to) then it automatically generates names like "object1", etc...

Yes, the style names are preserved and are exported as material names to the LWO file.

So you'll want to look at the materials list (or it may be called a "surface" list or something along those lines, I forget exactly what) in Modo to see those names.

Your objects will be set up with Styles from MoI becoming materials in Modo, and the material assignments will be set up so that objects that in MoI were assigned to the style named "Red" for example, will be assigned to a material named "Red" in Modo.

Yep... this was the case. Anyway around it?

Thanks for the explanations.

Hi Bill,

No, there's not currently any way to avoid making texture coordinates that are snug down to the trimming boundaries of a trimmed surface.

In MoI v3 I can add in an option for avoiding that though.

That option would be very useful for me. Is there a possibility that MoI v3 will support textures?
Thanks,
Bill

Hi Bill,

> Is there a possibility that MoI v3 will support textures?

Well there's always a possibility but so far it doesn't seem to likely since it's not mentioned very frequently in people's lists of requests. Things like modeling and editing tools seem to be much more in demand right now.

But if you want to influence it, add your Top 5 feature requests for v3 to this thread here:
