IE 9 and MoI

I've just installed the IE 9 beta. It is very good and looks just like Chrome!

However, since installing it I'm having a few problems with the MoI viewport. After being minimised, when restored, the panels at the left and along the bottom are not visible until moused over/clicked on. Additionally, the pop-up in the working area for Area, Zoom, Pan, etc, has a grey background, as soon as the cursor touches the viewport.

IE 9 is supposed to be the most web compliant browser yet, and has dropped support for legacy IE6 things. Is this the problem? Also IE9 uses hardware acceleration.

PS: I've uninstalled IE9 and MoI now works OK.

It kind of sucks, every time Microsoft changes its browser, it screws up MoI!

Let's not confuse "Michael Gibson Software" with "Beta". Maybe should report it to Microsoft in the IE9 beta bug reports???

Hi Steve,

Just recently saw a very similar report over on the ArtCAM Forum...
...ArtCAM also uses HTML coding as part of it's display.

Basically their reply was "IE9 is a Beta, so install & use it at your own risk, if it breaks ArtCAM then uninstall IE9."

regards Colin

Hi Steve, yeah there are still some glitches in IE9, which is not surprising since it is not finished yet.

I gave it a test and actually for the most part it seems to be working pretty well, there are not too many glitches and the ones that are there are mainly cosmetic issues.

So overall I'd say it is a pretty good sign that the first IE9 beta is working as well as it is - the first beta of IE8 was much more messed up than this.

Nope, the problem is just plain old bugs in IE, but some of these are in areas of the hosting mechanisms.

For example the viewport controls being gray would be due to the mechanism where a host of mshtml can tell it to draw into a given bitmap is not working properly at the moment. The same thing got broken in early IE8 builds as well and got fixed before the final IE8 release.

There are also a whole bunch of other hosting mechanisms that MoI uses which seem to be working fine though, so something like 98 out of 100 things are working ok and just a few glitches.

Most likely those glitches will get solved as they continue to work on it, at least I hope so.

appwiz.cpl (Add or Remove Programs)

Then it depends on what version of Windows you're running.

didn't work - my problem is not the display of the files, but that no export is saved. I have a stp file that I want to export to be able to use it in another program - but whatever option I use - there is no export file written.

What export format are you using?

Is it possible that your stp file only has curves in it and not any solids or surfaces?

If that's the case and you only have a wireframe model then that won't export anything to polygon mesh formats such as OBJ or LWO - for exporting to a polygon mesh format you need to have solids and surfaces that will have meshes created for them and not just wireframe curves.

That might be your problem, but it is hard to be sure without any more information. If that does not sound like what you are seeing, can you please send the STP file to me at moi@moi3d.com and also let me know what format you are trying to export into?

Hi macray, so also just to clarify - probably what you are seeing has to do with the kind of data that was imported from the STP file (if it is all curves only and no solids or surfaces) and not really anything to do with IE9 at all...

Ya that's why I told him to go to add/remove programs - but I don't think he tried that...

From what Michael's saying, it doesn't look like an IE problem anyway :)

I removed the update to IE9, so the display issue (the little navigation symbols in each display window; that this thread was originally for) is gone.

Now I have an .stp that I'd like to export to .igs or .sat but there is nothing saved... Will deinstall MoI and reinstall, perhaps this solves the problem.
The .stp has lots of surfaces that I'd like to use somewhere else. If I find no way to import I'll send you the file. but I'll try around some more first.

Hi macray, it sounds like probably a bug in the STP importer.

Try this as a possible workaround - open up the STP file and then save it out to a 3DM file instead of trying to go directly to .igs or .sat .

Then close MoI, and start it back up again and open up that 3DM file and now try to export to .igs or .sat, does it work ok with that sequence?

I've run across this in one other instance where saving to 3DM and then re-loading it straightened out whatever problem had happened to the geometry during the STP import.

If this does solve the problem, it would still be helpful if you could possibly send me the file (moi@moi3d.com) so I can try to see what is going on with the STEP importer that then makes the IGES and SAT exporters error out from their exports.
