double surfaces

hello micheal,
i have a little problem. i created a car with moi. i have some trouble with one part. if i join the patches and then separate and join it again, everything is okay. if i reload the file and separate this part again i get all patches doubled?

maybe you can have a look at the attachment. you'll find the specific patches in the cyan layer. copy all the patches to another style, join them and save the file. reload it and separate the joined parts. et voila, all is doubled :(

it's strange. hope you can help me.

thanks in advance.

Hi crydee, it looks like a bug but it is probably caused by an edge being messed up somewhere in one of those surfaces, something like a surface has a trimming boundary in it that has 2 of its own edges joined together or something like that. Something along those lines could possibly interfere with the mechanisms that build a sheet of connected surfaces by traversing edge connections.

I'll examine this more closely so that I can find out which surface in particular has the problem in it and then I should be able to repair it.

Hi crydee, I'm still examining it, but it appears that the problem is in this area here:

In that area the edges don't all meet up one-to-one, there are some pieces there that have edges skimming over the middle of some other surfaces and things like that:

Hi crydee, I've got a tuned up 3DM model version attached, which should now join without doubling - I trimmed this one surface here so that it kind of matched the surrounding surfaces edge-to-edge better:

So hopefully the attached 3DM file should let you continue on with the model now.

It may take me a while to analyze what exactly is going wrong with Join in your original case, and if it takes too long it might go on my list of things to look at in a little bit when v3 is underway. But thanks for posting the model in the "before" join state so that I could reproduce the problem over here, that helps a lot to give me a better chance at being able to figure out what is going wrong.

I suspect that Join is creating some kind of improper object in your original case, something like a non-manifold edge (edge joined to something like 3 surfaces instead of only 2 surfaces) or a tiny compressed edge, or a boundary with some of its own edges joined to each other, something along those lines. Something that apparently then causes the face traversal that is supposed to gather up just one side of the object to kind of leak over and gather faces on the other side of it as well.
