Suggestion: Cut at Point for 2d objects

Hi,

Maybe it has been already said, but it would be nice to be able to just trim 2d curves at a selected point directly.

Click at one specific point and the underlying object is trimmed there, keeping both parts.
It would be basically like 'add trim points' in trim, but all in one shot, not having to select object or pressing done.

If objects are stacked, both object could be segmented unless just one is preselected.

Just an idea..

Hi Marc, so you mean kind of like AutoCAD's "break" command, except without requiring you to type in @ after clicking the first point?

In general MoI commands are set up to try and follow a consistent pattern of selecting objects that you want to modify, and then having the command work on those objects.

The method that you are talking about though would not follow that pattern though.

But what I could see doing is to have a special "QuickTrim" command that was probably not in the default button layout but that would still be available by setting up a keyboard shortcut (or in the future possibly an optional button that could be added to the UI if you wanted) that would work in this alternate way.


Then there is still one kind of question area about this - should something like "QuickTrim" be actually focused on cutting the object and also throwing away a part of it like AutoCAD's break command (which then requires a second pick), or only on splitting the line and then immediately exiting?

How does that work in AutoCAD, is there a different command than "break" for that, or do people make a macro or whatever for the break command that then avoids the second step?

I think it would be best if it exited after one click, a quicker way of doing a very common task

I didn't though about the existing pattern of commands in moi, I reckon that might be a problem...

If I remember in autocad a "Break at point" secondary option existed.
Haven't touched it in years **Very glad!**

I don't actually use AutoCad any longer ... when I have to work with .dwg files I use ProgeCad (much less expensive than AutoCad).

Most of my current 2d work is in MoI and/or Rhino.

It seems to me that MoI 'trim' already works well ... one can break or trim pretty much at will ... but I can see the advantage of eliminating the last selection to simply make a break point in line(s) / curves.

Ah, I see what you mean.

So you want to be able to just trim a curve by selecting the curve, running the Trim command, and then selecting the point at which you wish to trim the curve.

Sounds good to me, I'd like this too. I often want to do simple trims like this, and have to first make a line before I can trim :)

Almost - but probably this one would work outside of regular object selection, you would start the command ("QuickTrim" or whatever, it would be a specialized separate command from the regular general purpose Trim since the regular trim does a lot of other stuff like trimming surfaces and not only curves, etc...) and then you would pick a point with object snaps on to any existing curve. Then the object that you put the point on would be cut at that point whether it was selected or unselected.

Basically which object is to be trimmed would be determined by what you snapped on to, rather than it being based on regular object selection.

Actually, you don't have to make a line, there is an option in the Trim command to pick some points on the curve to cut it with. To do that, click the "Add trim points" button that shows up in the Trim command at the stage where you pick the cutting objects:




The other method being requested is kind of a drafting efficiency kind of thing for making it a bit more streamlined to trim a lot of curves, at the cost of having a more specialized additional command that you would need to trigger to do it.

Probably in the future some stuff like that will come out as a set of drafting helper plugin tools.

How it works in VectorWorks. The knife tool (2D & 3D) has three options: Split By Point, touch a line/spline; Split By Line, drag a line; and Trim By Line, drag a line and an arrowhead appears on the side the knife is being held but pointing away from the cut, indicating that side to be retained.

Split By Line and Trim By Line are most useful in my work.
