how to import to 3ds max correctly?

Is there a right way to do it? I am getting shading artifacts all the time whatever options I set if i try to export as fbx or obj.
It works better if imported as iges although but my max 2008 hangs in a half of tryouts. Beside I would prefer to have a poly object.

Hi Kirk, I'd recommend using FBX format for the best results into Max, but you also need to make sure that you update your Max FBX import plugin to the latest version, versions older than 2009 had various bugs in the FBX importer.

The Max FBX import plugin page is here:

But you will need to go to the archive section for the previous release to get one for the older Max 2008 version, that is here:

Thanks you for the help. I have found a solution actually. It's necessary to check off "Somoothing group" check box in the fbx import dialog. That way it goes to max ok.

ps. I have current fbx plugin.
