Snap to surface

Being new to MOI, I'm slowly working through the video tutorials. This one - http://paqwak.com/?cat=5 - making a snowman, has some circles being drawn on the surface of the snowman to be extruded to form buttons (at 07.00mins). With On Surface Snap selected, I still can't seem to be able to keep the circle on the surface when using the Center method of drawing a circle, as the modeler does. I can do it with Three Point circles (below) but can anyone point out what I'm doing wrong with the former method? The large sphere to the right shows what is happening. Using V.2.

Ah, wait a minute, I now see that the circles are extruded both sides perhaps and then merged with the body. My mistake.

Hi Joe, welcome to MoI! It sounds like you have got your problem figured out already?

Yeah by its nature drawing a circle on a sphere will make the circle kind of skim the sphere and not be sunken down into it, but like you found enabling the "both sides" option for extrude will solve that by punching the shape out in both directions and getting it to punch into the sphere.

Also there's some description of on-surface drawing here:

Thank you for the welcome, Michael. Yes, sometimes it's hard to see exactly what is going on in some tutorials and when you are not fully versed in modeling processes it takes a bit of trial and error to work it out. Got there in the end though. And I will be working through the Help files as well.
