There's quite a lot of improvements in it since the alpha release!

When I try to import obj file I created in MOI, Sculptris says "Failed to import, has faces with more than four corners"
What am I doing wrong?

Hi Jerry,

> When I try to import obj file I created in MOI, Sculptris
> says "Failed to import, has faces with more than four corners"

I don't think that Sculptris is able to import just any kind of geometry - it doesn't like it when there are a lot of edges radiating out from a single point.

So you may not always be able to use it to modify things that you build in MoI, Sculptris is kind of more oriented towards importing or starting with pretty simple base shapes as the initial starting point for sculpting.

Also it's not really set up to handle things with a lot of sharp edges in them either.

But the particular error that you ran into in this case may be due to n-gon polygons in the file, try switching to "Output: Triangles only" when exporting from MoI:

That may help you for this particular case, but as I mentioned above you probably should not expect to use Sculptris as a way to modify just any MoI object in general, it will probably only work if you have a pretty simple and smooth shape.

You can make really complex things within Sculptris, it's just that it does not like to import any kind of shape as the starting point.

Hi Jerry,

Within the documentation that comes with Sculptris, there's a section about importing...

Import OBJ - Import an existing OBJ file. Useful if you want multiple objects for sculpting, or somewhat more complex topology than a sphere. Compatibility is limited. Use single closed triangulated mesh(es) without sharp corners, and with less than 24 connections per vertex (no high-resolution spheres, unless they are geospheres)

HTH, Colin

Thanks guys. "Triangles Only" works for the simple shapes which is really all I need for a start.

""""""""""not god not bad..."awesome" ;)""""""""""""""

Well, as the app is now, it give people the free ability to work with sculpting programs. This may not remain the case.

It could be good if they take the approach of say "Camtasia", where you can buy the big, full featured app, or just use the free version, which does a great job, just doesnt have a bunch of extra tools.

Most likely though, they are just aquiring the ability and it will integrate into their Monetary structure. Say goodbye to sculptris.

Except, the Dr. didnt plan any real further development AND I have a standalone app the way it is now, so I guess no loss. Only pixologic gain.

Not the equivelant of say.... "Michael selling out to Siemens" or something like that....LOL (Sorry Michael. I do hope that if you decide, you could retire with some kind of 6 million dollar buyout scenario) On that note, I wonder how many have already tried!!!!! :o

Yeah, given that his previous plan was to not develop it any further this sounds like good news.

It's maybe too bad that he didn't approach it more as a low cost commercial project more from the start instead of as a hobby project. Something like that might have let him stay independent and continue developing it on his own.

But being an entrepreneur means doing all kinds of other work apart from just coding, some (actually most) developers don't like that.

I told my wife when I first tried Sculptris that the ZBrush people would grab it. As one of the posters on the Sculptris forum said: "I cannot say that I am suprised that they wanted to snatch you up and drain your brain. Sculptris must have really scared the heck out of them".

Inevitable I'm afraid and who could blame him?

If I told my wife that, she'd probably roll her eyes and call me a dork. But hey, that's just mine. :-)
I am very happy for him getting the job at Pixologic. Seems a perfect match. And I'm excited to see what evolves from this...
