since Octance announced their renderer, Arion/Randomcontrol had to make some noise too :)

From the Arion faq:

Q.- When will Arion be released?

A.- When it's done.

they have been saying that for years?

The price of Arion will be coherent with the performance and features of the package, and the fact that Arion is next-gen technology. There will be licensing options designed to cover a wide range of needs, depending on the hardware at your disposal.

even Autodesk has a more friendly pricing structure :) I also notice SWAP is 345 € ( that is just a feature that should be included in fry)...just greedy IMO.

BUT for me the biggest disadvantage is CUDA... I certainly don't want to have to worry about which card I'm using and from which company...perhaps OpenCL it may prove to be a better solution in long run(?).
Also CUDA it's very hard to develop software for it and perhaps one of the reasons why it has been taking them (randomcontrol) SO LONG...also take a look at nVidia's iRay solution even that is far from reality :)

anyhow all those solutions are just a hype for the time been except if you are WETA or any other big VFX studio.

I'm impressed by the idea to get all hardware working - CPU+GPU+slaves. I would be glad, if someone would develope an engine that will use this all, but allow biased rendering too. I hope Vray will do it. At the moment I used Vray for Rhino daily and I have no problem to get speed&quality. The speed per little renderfram (5 machines) is not bad, but a speed boost by factor 100 could be more than enough. Seldom an image needs more than an hour (high res interiors).
I afraid, using an unbiased GPU engine instead the current slave solution could be not the big deal, since unbiased rendering is much slower. Important for me is, that it work for complex interiors too. Exteriors and product shots can be quite fast done already today.

I find it a little misplaced from refractivesoftware to come do such dirty marketing on third party forums.

There is one small difference here.... Philbo is a long time MoI user and forum participant.

He's been a respected contributor with valuable input. FYI.

Michael has not sought to limit posts like these in the past. Personally, I'm glad the posts related to these renderers come up. I don't have a lot of time to search for software like this. This forum is one of the few places I frequent. It is about balance and as Burr said, Philbo isn't just here to pitch product at us.

I found MoI thanks to some (lots!) of posts by Frenchy Pilou on the Kerkythea renderer forum. What goes around comes around.

Octane looks sweet. If only I had a Cuda card :(

That is no excuse and what's been said is pure speculation.

Yes it is hardly my or Refractive Software's intent to slam Arion or any other renderer. There is plenty of room in the market for both paid solutions and with open source solutions as well. I have removed my initial comment as it did not contribute to the intent of the thread.

Sincerely:

PhilBo

Hi PhilBo,

I do not feel harassed by your postings.
Also, I am sure that Michael has an eye on his forum.

Hi Phil, thanks for simmering down the thread.

Now that you are associated closely with one particular rendering program, you'll probably find your online comments to be interpreted somewhat differently in some situations than they were previously... It will probably be a bit of an adjustment to get used to that. :)
