Dimensions and printing

Hi Michael ...

As usual I am using MoI more and more for my basic layout and modeling ... it is really quick and easy to use.

On the other hand, there are some things that would be really helpful ... dimensioning and text would be a big one (I know there are other programs that will do that but I sure would like to be able to put notes and dimensions into some of my early draft stuff ... before I reach the working drawings stage and switch to another program for that portion of the work).

Printing from MoI would also be very helpful along the way.

Not pushing but if these are to be implemented are you aiming for ver 3, or later?

cheers,
eric

Hi eric, I don't really have a "set in stone" schedule for v3 so it is not really possible at this stage to guarantee what will be done in it.

However, some simple dimensions and printing (just at a basic level) are definitely areas that are on my radar that I would like to make progress in for v3.

Hi Michael ...

Well that's kind of good news ... at least it is on the radar ... a while back I was hoping some might be done in V2.

Grabbing screen shots with Snagit and then using the Snagit editor does a pretty good job for noting details that have to be shared with others.

It would be helpful to be able to print the image out to PDF.

You are doing a great job and I have never seen support like yours!

cheers,
eric

Hi eric, yeah it would have been nice to have it in v2, but there are only so many hours in the day...

re: screen capture - instead of using SnagIt, you might be interested in setting up the following script on a keyboard shortcut in MoI:

script:var v = moi.ui.getActiveViewport(); if ( v != null ) { moi.view.lineWidth = 4; v.renderToClipboard( 2560, 2560 ); moi.view.lineWidth = 1; }

Go to Options > Shortcut keys, and set up a new shortcut key and paste in the above as the Command part for it.

Then when you press that key it will generate a higher resolution viewport image and copy it to the clipboard. If you then reduce that in size in an image editing program it can make for a nice effect.

Hi Anis ...

I have Rhino and do all my 2D dimensioning with it (and some 3d also).
I purchased Alibre but have not actually used it yet.

cheers,
eric

I use the free version of SketchUp for dimensioning my MoI modelling.

Hmm, and is there a way to put out a drawing, lets say, in M 1:20 ?

Hi Janne,

> Hmm, and is there a way to put out a drawing, lets say, in M 1:20 ?

Do you mean in SketchUp?

There do seem to be some controls in there for controlling the scale of the printout, but they will not be active with the default perspective view.

In SketchUp, go to the Camera menu, and set the "Parallel projection" option and also go to the Camera > Standard views submenu and choose one of those views in order to get the print scaling controls to be active.

Hi andras,

You mean in the future for MoI?

Grouping will be a way to organize your model into a hierarchy of containers... It will not really have much to do with dimensioning.

The reason why I say "basic" dimensions is that I probably won't have an extremely detailed level of control over the dimensions like supporting 5 different international standards of arrowhead symbols, or stuff like that which you may find in programs that are very focused on drafting.

The main goal will not really be to replace a dedicated drafting program, but just to be able to place some basic annotations for simple communication.

just because I thought dimensions will be complex object by lines and text in a group...

Hi andras, I see what you mean... That is true that a dimension is going to be some collection of lines and text within it. But there will be additional logic to control it and arrange these pieces that will not be very similar to groups.

So a dimension is probably going to be more like a special kind of object that will be added into MoI and not just something that comes automatically with a group function.
