I have not figured out a place to put it in the UI yet, so to call it you have to set up a keyboard shortcut for it.

Well, Join is kind of like a grouping function, it forms a curve that has all the joined parts as segments within it.

Join does not itself attempt to simplify or greatly change the structure of the pieces being joined.

If you have a badly segmented and fractured curve with messy control points, tons of little pieces, etc... then Join does not automatically solve that, your joined result will still have a ton of individual segments inside of it instead of simplified cleaner segments.

Some kinds of surfacing operations try to preserve the segmented nature of your input curves, so if you have a overly fractured segmentation you will also get fragmented results in the sweep (made up of many surface pieces instead of fewer for example).

Hi Pilou, also one other note - the reason why Join does not try to automatically change your curve structure is that is can be bad in many circumstances to do that, because it means you would get different behavior (like different number of pieces, etc...) when then doing a Separate later on to try and do some work on individual pieces again.

It's nice for Join to remain symmetrical with Separate. That's why it will be generally set up to use some other commands to alter a curve (to simplify it, reconstruct it, fuse segments together, stuff like that) rather than Join.

Yeah for rendering purposes you should probably be all set with the boolean solution, I believe it will save you some extra steps instead of attempting to build it with sweep and then planing off pieces after that.

Let me know if you get stuck when trying to use that technique in actual practice.
