Groups postponed until v3

I'm zeroing in on finishing up the last v2 beta here, currently working on mitered corners on 1-rail sweeps.

It does not look like I'm going to have time to make Groups happen in v2 though, it's just going to take too much time to finish and I've already delayed releasing v2 significantly from what I had originally wanted.

I definitely want to add it in so that there will be way to organize things with hierarchy like parent/child relationships etc... but I'll be picking that up in the v3 timeframe instead of v2.

There has still been a lot of progress in v2 on object organization techniques, since you can use named objects, types, and styles in the Scene browser, that's going to have to do for v2.

I do expect to release the final v2 beta within the next day or two, before the current one expires on Dec 21.

Good news Michael.

Not having groups is not too bad for now I think.
The layers and objects implementation already makes a huge difference from v1, so v2 is definitely worth it as it is.

Glad you will manage to add mittered corners for sweeps, this was the one basic command which I was still missing.

One a side note, will you have a grace period to update? at least a couple of weeks?
I need to finish a couple of project by the 22nd, and am running the beta version. I don't want to change anything before these projects are done.
Thanks,

Hi okapi, yes there will definitely be an overlap time period so that the last beta will not immediately expire right when the v2 final is released. I will make sure to have at least a month overlap, possibly longer.

I will still need to update the documentation before v2 is completely finalized.

So the next step coming up here within the next couple of days is not quite the full release yet, but hopefully the software itself will be all done unless there are any bug fixes for some of the new stuff.

I am agree, The current V2 already contains many features comparing to V1.
And yes, its almost 2 years development. MoI V1 released on January 21 2008.

You should take a holiday after V2 release :)

The current version offers many options for object organization.
It will be a good thing that new users can sample these new tools in the demo!

Maybe temporarily remove the "group" label for V2?

Bad news on the groups - but you have to stop sometime or you'll never release anything :-)

I agree with the others - there's loads of cool stuff added to V2 that makes it a very worthwhile upgrade even without the groups.

A smart move, more over if V2 demo is coming soon !

(any roadmap for V3 ? , I know you don't really like it, I'm really curious when surface continuity options will be added, same for multiple edge blending :))

Hi PaQ,

> any roadmap for V3 ?

Nothing really set in stone, there's quite a lot of stuff that I would like to get into V3 of course but I don't really have much idea of a prioritized schedule yet. Probably Groups and some file I/O stuff would be some early targets.

I will probably take at least a few weeks at the start to do some general UI experimentation though.

Something that i would have love to use but we can wait for the final release of V3 to get it.

V2 like others said before me, offer alot of new tools to keep us working with V2 until V3 comes in beta test.

Thanks Micheal.

Not a problem on groups here either. We will get to use groups in the V3 Beta period anyway so it's as good as a given.

Good luck with the release of V2 Michael.

Thanks for keeping us posted Michael. I too can wait for groups
and have a good system for export that does what I need with V2.
You're design path of V2 is first rate, and I'm looking forward to
the release. :)

Hopefully V3 will add some other export options (perhaps Collada)
that will support parent/child relationships.

Hi Michael,

No probs on the groups.
I just like to say that you're doing a great job for all users and it has been and still is a great experience following the progress of this well thought out software.
As mentioned many times before the support you provide, being a one man show, is unbelievable compared to the big guns, you make it a personal experience, we (MoI users) feel like that we are dealing with one of our mates.
It shows in the software and support that you are very passionate in getting things right the first time and not just hacking some code together to get it out there with the fix it later attitude, that to me, and I think a lot of others, is a refreshing experience when it comes to software.

Stick to the path you're taking and you have my full support.

Cheers
~Danny~

Respect for our Mrs' for that one. :o

Although in your case, perhaps a tall one and a warm Saki when it's all over!
