Transparent or wire view

Greeting all,
Please forgive me if this has been posted elsewhere but a cursory search whilst up against a deadline has prompted me to ask:

Is a script or option available which allows a part to be displayed as a semi transparent or wire object while displaying the internal structure of an assembly? I have an assembly that is loaded into a cylindrical part with internal features; showing the relationships is very tough when opaque. If I remove the outer layer of parts it is then unclear what the relationships are.

Thanks for your answers in advance,
David

Hi David,

Version 2.0 Beta:

Browser>Select Edges
Then Copy/Paste.
Invert selection.
Finally hide object.

If you want to keep the curves, you can give them the same name.

Thanks Paolo,
I had not thought of this approach. I do hope that semitransparent is available though as this leaves out a lot of detail.

In the browser pane, have the styles laid out. In the object type tree, hide faces. Then in the styles tree, unhide the interior stuff. 2 clciks.

Hi David, there isn't currently any actual transparency.

But there are a couple of alternatives currently - one is to hide faces of the exterior parts only like Burr mentions (The scene browser in v2 has a control under Types > Faces which can be useful for this). That can give you a display as seen in this gallery item:
http://moi3d.com/gallery/viewitem.php?id=239&subid=1

Also there is a hidden-line display where hidden edges are drawn with a faint dashed line style. That can give some visual information similar to transparency. To enable that go to Options > View > Display hidden lines, and also in v2 there is a checkbox for it on the Side pane under the View palette.

If you need a more detailed presentation with more effects, then usually the method people use for that is to export the model to a rendering program where there is a lot of control over different materials and visual properties.

Thanks all,

I can use it with the faces hidden :(

It would be nice though in the styles to have a slider for transparency in the color edit, say maybe for the wish list :)

While I can import it to another program I guess I have gotten used to the high level of visual style that is currently available in MoI. I usually just grab screen shots from MoI for early concept development with my work/customer base. When I have someone waiting for a visual it is cumbersome to export, import and set up at the early stage of an idea

Some food for thought; see Michael your program is so natural to use I'm becoming lazy and afraid to using anything else when time is critical :)

Hi David,

I usually fudge transparency when required, it's pretty simple and quick, especially now with styles in MoI V2.

It's just three easy steps:

1. Here I have a cylinder with some internal items, I take a screen shot using the MoI screen dump script.

2. Without moving anything hide the cylinder and take another screen shot of the internals.

3. Take your screen dumps into your favourite graphics editor (I used Gimp) and place each image on a separate layer making sure the cylinder is the very top layer which you set a transparency to the desired effect.

Hope this helps.

Cheers
~Danny~

DannyT,

What an excellent Idea, I was unaware of a screen dump script. That would make layering quicker with less alignment issues.
Could you elaborate where I might find it?

Thanks,
David

Ah BurrMan,
Thank you for the links... This week has been too busy and I passed right over them while hurrying around.
David

Edit/Add - The quality of the screen grab is excellent and large!

Hi David, the capture to clipboard script is "Resolution Adjustable". Note the values in the script. Your video card will be the only limitation here though. I tried to run the larger value on an older card and it fails. Havnt tried to see how big i can go on my 1.5 gig Nvidia yet though :O
