Hi Anis, many thanks for your kind response.

The model will be appearing in a documentary on the history of the RAN, assuming of course that the producers find it acceptable. I'm really not sure what they are intending to do with the model but I have seen the first two episodes of the documentary and it was very good. I really hope I can produce something they will like. As I have a regular day job (not 3D sadly) I have minimal time to do this. Fortunately, most everything I ask Moi to do it does with ease.

Here are a couple of progress renders via Kerkythea. One of them seems to show a shading problem at the stern? Also I didn't align my portholes before I trimmed (too many and too little time) so they are a bit oval shaped at bow and stern. Michael, would it be possible to include an option for these types of projected trims so that the shape of the drill determines the shape of the trim rather than it stretching along the shape of the target surface? The ones at the stern are going to bother me....

I'm not really sure if it is actually possible to do that exactly - for example if you have a planar curve like a circle, if you are trying to put that flat circle onto a curved surface it has to change somehow because you can only put a planar curve onto another plane without changing it in some way.

But it sounds like you may want to try angling the cutting objects so that the projection does not deviate so far from the surface normal.

When you do a projection, the curves are projected along the perpendicular to the cutting curve's plane, so if you rotate it for example in the top view, that will alter how it projects on to the surface.

The other option is to extrude the porthole a bit then sink it in to the hule then trim it and join, so you would have some small "Walls" that connect the perfect circle to the curved surface. A bit more complicated model though.

(Not that you needed me to tell you that. A very nice model!)

Hi Guys,

I fixed my portholes by angling the cutting objects. I'm happy with the results. Still a long way to go though...

Hi Everyone,

A couple of progress shots. About a week of part time work to go I reckon. I couldn't have managed this in this time frame using any other 3D software I've tried. Not a single failed boolean in the whole process. Very impressive.

Hi Tony and Steve,

Many thanks for your interest. It is much appreciated.

Steve, I have another model to do, HMAS Yarra 2, a WW2 Grimsby Class sloop. I will do a blow-by-blow thread for that one if that would be useful (a bit pressed for time at the moment so I will need to do it as I work on the model). Will be 2 or 3 weeks before I can make a start though.

There are some other boat threads on the forum which might be useful to you (Brian & Jean-Paul have done some nice hull shapes). Also, I've found that Rhino tutorials can be useful for techniques. I think this link is a really good one: http://www.3drender.com/rhino/boathtml/index.htm

Will you be building a ship using plans or doing one free form? I'd be interested to know which ship(s) you want to model.

Another great resource here: http://www.dreadnoughtproject.org/

The plans section has some ships in there I'd like to do myself. No Kormoran though. If anybody knows where I can get plans for Kormoran, let me know.

Hi Steve,

Thanks so much for your kind words about my ship :)

It isn't a complete triumph yet though. I am attempting to rebuild the hull. My hull was mostly networked, unlike the Rhino tutorial I linked to which is lofted. The networked hull is OK but lofted it is nearly perfect. The boat in the Rhino tutorial has a simpler stern which lends itself to simple lofting. My attempt still has an issue or two as per this thread: http://moi3d.com/forum/messages.php?webtag=MOI&msg=3002.1

My model of HMAS Sydney II is more or less done. There are some very minor (probably invisible!) details I want to add for my own satisfaction and I still need to texture (decks, flags and a dazzle camo scheme to go with the one pictured).

Hi Mark, it's looking really great even before having the final textures in place.

Extremely realistic!

Mark you have much more skill--and patience--than I could put into a subject like that.
Thanks for sharing.
