Hi Tony and Steve,

Many thanks for your interest. It is much appreciated.

Steve, I have another model to do, HMAS Yarra 2, a WW2 Grimsby Class sloop. I will do a blow-by-blow thread for that one if that would be useful (a bit pressed for time at the moment so I will need to do it as I work on the model). Will be 2 or 3 weeks before I can make a start though.

There are some other boat threads on the forum which might be useful to you (Brian & Jean-Paul have done some nice hull shapes). Also, I've found that Rhino tutorials can be useful for techniques. I think this link is a really good one: http://www.3drender.com/rhino/boathtml/index.htm

Will you be building a ship using plans or doing one free form? I'd be interested to know which ship(s) you want to model.

Another great resource here: http://www.dreadnoughtproject.org/

The plans section has some ships in there I'd like to do myself. No Kormoran though. If anybody knows where I can get plans for Kormoran, let me know.

Hi Steve,

Thanks so much for your kind words about my ship :)

It isn't a complete triumph yet though. I am attempting to rebuild the hull. My hull was mostly networked, unlike the Rhino tutorial I linked to which is lofted. The networked hull is OK but lofted it is nearly perfect. The boat in the Rhino tutorial has a simpler stern which lends itself to simple lofting. My attempt still has an issue or two as per this thread: http://moi3d.com/forum/messages.php?webtag=MOI&msg=3002.1

My model of HMAS Sydney II is more or less done. There are some very minor (probably invisible!) details I want to add for my own satisfaction and I still need to texture (decks, flags and a dazzle camo scheme to go with the one pictured).

Hi Mark, it's looking really great even before having the final textures in place.

Extremely realistic!

Mark you have much more skill--and patience--than I could put into a subject like that.
Thanks for sharing.

Thanks so much guys for the kind responses.

I have been asked to do 4 more ships: HMAS's Yarra & Australia II, HSK Kormoran & RM Bartolomeo Colleoni.

I'm going to start on Yarra tonight and see how fast I can complete it. I will start a new thread and give a blow by blow account of the construction if you guys aren't sick of ships by now!

It has been a good week so far. I work as a purchasing officer for an engineering firm which has a design and drafting office. My boss saw my ship and has asked me if I'd like to train as a drafter :) So thanks MoI for the leg up and thanks Michael for the brilliant software.

not bad to get hired for purchasing but doing something else... fine ship that you show off here.
