Styles question

Hi Michael,

Not had a chance to play with styles up to now but, in general, I'm liking the new styles and lighting combination.

However, two things:

First, the default style has dark edges, new styles have light edges.

This looks weird to me - I would like them to be the same. Given a choice I would go for dark edges, given a better choice, an option for light or dark would be good.

Next thing:
If I change the default style to be something other than black, then it behaves like a new style. If I change it back to black I expected it to go back to grey with black lines. But it doesn't. So I've lost my default setting for that file.

These both seem a bit inconsistent to me.

So, any chance of getting a setting to choose between dark edges like the default style, or light edges as they are now, please.

Cheers.

Regards
Tony

Hi Tony,

There are new settings for this in the options, unless I'm mistaken in what your saying.

Cheers

Hi Danny,

Yes I know about that setting. But it changes ALL the edges to the same colour.

What I was trying to achieve was the same as the default, colour with edges as darker version of the object colour. Or actually a choice would be nicer :-)

Here's a pic:

I cannot see a way to make my own styles that look like the default one. Yet MoI is clearly capable of displaying the object this way. I know I can make the default style like the new ones by changing it and saving a template file.

It's not really a big thing but seemed odd to me that, out of the box, new styles aren't like the default one, or vice versa. It stood out like a sore thumb as soon as I started messing with the object colours.

Hi Tony,

> First, the default style has dark edges,

Actually the default style doesn't just have "dark" edges, it actually has black-colored edges.

If you want other edges to also be drawn in black, that setting that Danny shows above will do that now.

> new styles have light edges.

Actually they don't - the edges get drawn directly in the style color (same as regular curves) without any lightening applied to them. There is just an optical illusion that makes it seem like that since the surfaces all around them get darker due to shading applied to them.

But maybe I can come up with some options that would let you set edges to be either darkened or lightened from the base style color though, I'll take a look.

I can't seem to repeat this over here, can you please post a file that has this problem in it?

Are you certain you set the color back to black and not something like really dark gray, which will behave different from pure black?

Hi Michael,

Yes I knew that one. But not what I was after.

I see - looks kinda odd though - very different from the default style. Any particular reason the default style isn't drawn the same way?

This would be great, thanks very much.

Okay, just tested this again (twice) making sure that I had RGB down at 0, and it works as expected. So I must assume that I had it set for dark grey. Sorry about that.

Hi Tony,

> Any particular reason the default style isn't drawn the same way?

Yes - since the default style has color=black (since in the 2D sense black is the default color for text or line drawings on a sheet of paper for example similar to the text that you are reading in this message right now), if surfaces were drawn in a black color, the display would look like this:

That's because the way illumination generally works, the full object color is displayed in areas of the highest illumination, then gradually goes to black in areas with less illumination hitting them.

When the surface color starts out as black, then that means it is black in the area of full illumination, so you can't really see the difference between illuminated and non-illuminated areas when that happens (as shown above).

To avoid that, there is a special case for surface colors, where if the style is set to pure black the surface color will use white instead.

Hi Michael,

I have one more request on this subject please.

If possible, can you make it so that we can change how much darker, or lighter, the edges will be? Rather than have a fixed amount.

That would give loads of control over how the models are displayed.

Thanks again.

Regards
Tony

Hi Tony, I've set this up for the next beta release.

There will be 2 new choices for the Edge color option: "Darkened" or "Lightened" (in addition to "By style" and "Fixed color").

Those will use the style color but transform it towards black or towards white by a factor that you can control using a slider bar that pops up when that option is picked.

Ok, so I'm clearly missing something here :)

Are styles a new beta feature or something?

I'm using the 1.1 demo and there aren't any of these features...

Hi NightCabbage - yes this styles stuff is part of the v2 beta release, it isn't in version 1.1 .

There's a whole bunch of other new stuff in v2 as well, there is a collection of all the release notes covering the new features here:

Wow, you've been developing V2 for over a year!

That feature list is pretty big :)

Nice!

I'd love to give ideas for improvement and bug reports, etc. but I guess I can't with this old version...

Hehe, but I'm hoping to have bought it by then anyway :)

When is V2 due for full release?

And will it be a free upgrade from V1?

Hi NightCabbage,

> When is V2 due for full release?

There is not an exact date set, but it is getting pretty close... I think there will be just one more beta release and then the software will be ready and I'll then switch over to tuning up the documentation.

> And will it be a free upgrade from V1?

No, but there will be a discounted upgrade license available for v1 owners, some more info here:
