Continuing from the last...is it a good process to use - the using of photographs for each axis - for objects you want to model from real life, too?

It's more common to use blueprints or technical plans which are not exactly the same as photographs.

There is a different kind of software and modeling process called photogrammetry which involves a process of analyzing multiple photographs from different angles and identifying common points in each one to produce a model.

That's a much different kind of modeling process than MoI, if you are interested in producing models from photographs you might want to check that out, there is a variety of software out there for that, one example is PhotoModeler http://www.photomodeler.com .
