Using RotoScopes

Hello,
I've been playing with MOI for a few months now and I finally feel like I've had my
"ah-ha" moment and now feel fairly comfortable starting a real production job with it.
But, we use RotoScopes when producing our Pre-Vis models.
Basically an image in either the top, front and or side view windows that allows us to trace
shapes when building... from an image.

Is there a way to load these rotoscopes into MOI's windows?

Please let me know,
thanks
Mike Fitz

Hi Mike, there isn't any way to load these into MoI currently, but I am working on it for the next beta release. So it shouldn't be too much longer before this is available.

In the meantime, some people have found this utility program to be useful for getting an image guide to work: http://home.insightbb.com/~ryanvm/tinyutilities/vitrite/ .

Hi Michael,
thanks for the reply.
I think you have put together the base for real attractive 3d modeling program.
I look foward to the rotoscopes feature....
I think after that I will be able to add MoI to my production pipeline.
Thanks!

Hello Michael and others,

I tried the "vitrite" utility to use a drawing guide behind de MoI user interface. However, it seems to make the MoI user interface transparent, except for the drawing canvas. It could be an error of my graphics card, as all windows seems to behave "buggy" with "vitrite". I work on a laptop with an ATI Radeon Mobility 9000.

I attached a screenshot. Note that initially the drawing canvas is also transparent, but as soon as the mouse is moved on the buttons on the right, for example to select the "spline drawing'' function, the drawing canvas returns to the original (non-transparent) state.

The only workaround I have found is to use another modelling program to draw the ouline of the object, save it in IGES or 3dm format, and import it into MoI.

Yours sincerely,

Ray.

Hi Ray, I am right now in the process of working on enabling image backgrounds inside of MoI, so this will get better within a few days.

Michael,
any chance you could have a time frame on when we'd be running with rotoscopes?
I have a great project that would be a perfect test run for me.
No pressure:)

thanks

I think I should have an initial release with it on Thursday. But it won't be completely finished yet, you'll be able to place an image but not move it around after you've placed it. I'll finish the editing part for the next one after.

Here's a sneak preview on what it looks like:

Michael,
Not to keep on this subject as I know you are working hard to move things along....
But after thinking about this, most 3d modeling apps don't show the rototscopes in the 3d view or camera/perspective view window.
I feel like it gets in the way when trying to subjectively view the models development.

Just my 2cents....

Hi Mike, I sort of thought this might be an issue. I have added an option that controls this, so you can set it to show images in all views, or only in the Top/Front/Right ortho views.

There is also an option for transparency, and another one to control whether images are displayed either underneath everything, on top of everything as an overlay, or mixed-in as if it was a regular object.

You can also hide and show individual images.

Let me know if you think that there are any other important options not covered here.
