Make sure you have "object snap" turned on (and then make sure "axis" is ticked).

Those go through a pretty detailed step-by-step for building a few basic models, if you haven't seen those yet those are definitely worth going through to get an overall introduction.

The tutorials are a great place to start!

Also, more so than object snap, you wan to make sure that "Straight snap" is enabled. This will produce little guide lines when you are moving in the x, y and z directions.
