Same thing happens here at work on NX6, exact same error.
I did some quick tests to see if there was any difference with different settings and export options using the file attached.
The sequence was;

*save as step with colours in the model, Write .Mtl file, checked.
*save as step with no colours (default colour) in the model, Write .Mtl file, checked.
*save as step with colours in the model, Write .Mtl file, unchecked.
*exported. as step with colours in the model, Write .Mtl file, checked.
*exported. as step with colours in the model, Write .Mtl file, unchecked..
*save as step with colours and object name in the model, Write .Mtl file, checked.
*save as step with colours and object name in the model, Write .Mtl file, unchecked.

All have the same error result with NX6.
I also remembered explaining how NX handles it's layer system, where colours are handled separate and not part of the layer.

As I noted before, the STEP file came in fine to Pro-E Wildfire 3.0. I just now opened it into Alibre and it opened up just fine also.

So far only issue is with UG.

Hi Danny, thanks for sending that, I've forwarded that one along as well.

One quick thing - I'm not sure if the log you had attached in there was complete, as it doesn't show the errors that were shown in Michael T's screenshot.

Was the log possibly truncated or is there a different error log? If I can get that error log that Michael was showing but for your model import into NX6 (which will probably contain different line numbers than what Michael T's one), that may be useful for me to send along as well since it may help the developer to review the particular areas of the file that NX is complaining about.

Hi Danny, also quick note re: .mtl file option - that option only actually has to do with OBJ format export.

The material definitions (like the actual color of the material) for OBJ format are not actually stored directly in the OBJ file itself, but rather in a companion MTL file that is written at the same time.

If you don't want that secondary file written when saving to OBJ format, you can disable that option.

I think what I will do though is to disable writing color information to STEP files for the next v2 beta.

It looks like that area of the library that I'm using is not quite all finished up for STEP format export.

I'll leave it in place for IGES and SAT though.
