Hi Alexito, MoI v1 can export curves to 3DM, IGES, and AI formats (2D only for AI).

For MoI v2 also adds curve export to STEP, SAT, and SKP format exports.

> But I need to export my Curves in Bryce 3d so in .obj format or .3ds

Even though it is technically possible to store true curves in an .obj file, it is very rarely supported. The vast majority of programs only expect to see polygon mesh data in an .obj file, so MoI does not try to export other kinds of objects into it, only meshes.

For 3DS, I don't think it is even possible to store a curve in that format at all, I think it is only structured to hold triangle mesh data.

Do you have any example files that have curves in them that you can load into Bryce?

If so if you could post an example, that would let me see what it supports for transferring curves.

But most normally 3D curve data would be transferred with 3DM, IGES, STEP, or SAT formats to other programs.

That's cool, but I think Alexito was asking about loading curves into Bryce and not Blender?

Does Bryce support importing curves in obj format?

No Michael Bryce doesn't support importing curves in obj format .

But you said that MoI can export curves to 3DM and Bryce can Import 3DMF

is it the same thing or is far from it ?

Bryce can Import a lot of formats I will give you the list maybe we will find something.. ;)

Thank you Michael and Pilou

here it is :

Bryce can import objects saved to the following file formats.

TrueSpace (.cob) Versions up to 4.0 are supported. Material properties are supported.

VideoScape (.vsa) All versions are fully supported.

VRML1 (.wrl) Imports all properties relevant to Bryce, including camera, light, and surface and material textures.

LightWave (.lwo or .lws) Both objects and scenes are supported. The camera, lights, and all objects (with material information) are imported. Versions 6 and up are not supported.

Heightfield (.hf) Used to import descriptions of heightfields (terrains).

USGS DEM (.dem) All forms of DEM files are supported.

USGS SDTS (.ddf) This format is the new USGS format which will replace DEM files.

Portable Greyscale Map (.pgm) Used to import descriptions of heightfields (terrains).

3d Studio® Objects (.3ds)

3DMF (.3mf)

AutoCad® (.dfx)

Direct 3D (.x)

Wavefront (.obj)

WCS Elev (.elev)

WorldToolKit® (.nff)

Bryce does not work with curves. Notice no curve tools. if the curves you want can be planar, then you can trick it by extruding your curves in Moi, selecting not to cap, then export the obj. Then in Bryce, give it a Y attribute of 0.

Curve.

Nope, those are totally different.

3DM is the Rhino file format.

3DMF is the file format from the old Apple Macintosh Quick Draw 3D system (Wikipedia link), which was abandoned by Apple about 10 years ago so it is a very rarely used format in general.

Hi Alexito, nearly all of those formats that you list there do not any capability provided within the format to hold curves.

Those are mostly set up to only contain polygon mesh objects.

One exception in your list there is DXF - however DXF can contain a lot of various types of objects including polygon mesh objects as well as things like lines, curves, circles, arcs, .... But it is not unusual for programs that are designed to only work with polygon mesh data to skip all these other kinds of things and only read polygon mesh objects that can be found in a DXF file, most likely Bryce is set up like that.

If you'd like to try, I do have a DXF converter that you can download from here:
http://moi3d.com/wiki/Resources#3dmCurves2DXF_converter

That is a small stand-alone converter program that can take a 3DM file saved from MoI with curves in it, and then generate a DXF file with curves in it.

You might give that a try, but my guess is that Bryce will not read the entire DXF file and will just skip the curves that are in it. But it is probably worth trying out.

Basically if a program is not designed to work on curves, then it is pretty hard to import curves into it, that's pretty much what you are dealing with I think.

Nice Trick BurrMan but for what I want it will be too difficult to do.

Yeah you right Michael Bryce skip the curves and even skip the surfaces, in fact Nothing appears in Bryce with my 3dm
file converted in DFX; Burrman is right I think It's simply because there is no curves in Bryce.

I'm not interseted to modeling in Bryce but I want a render with my planes and my curves.

I post you an exemple, it will be more clear

I didnt look at the crashing 3dm file but the picture you posted looks like all planar surfaces which will export out as obj into bryce. The curves no, but you cant render a curve anyway.

It appears that the file that causes the crash is possibly corrupted, maybe it did not upload properly or something like that...

It also crashes when trying to load into Rhino v3 or v4.

The crash is happening inside of the OpenNURBS library code for reading 3DM files. I'll take a look to see if I can tune it up to skip the corrupted areas.

Hi Alexito,

> Ok I repost it

That new .zip file is corrupted as well (this time the unzipper program reports the corruption), it looks like your uploads are incomplete or something like that?

Do you often have problems uploading things, or is this something that is only happening to you on the MoI forum?

Sorry it is still not clear to me exactly what you are trying to do even after looking at your example.

Is it that you want the edges of your polygons to be rendered in addition to the shaded polygons themselves? Like a "wireframe view" being displayed at the edges of your surfaces?

If so then that is somewhat different than rendering "curves".

Normally when you say "curves", that actually means a specific thing in MoI, like curves that are drawn using Draw curve / Freeform, things like that. Those are independent objects, edge curves that are part of surfaces are slightly different.

That previous DXF converter program that I mentioned is only for converting independent "curve objects" such as a drawn line or freeform curve, into a DXF file, it will not try to grab edges of surfaces.

At any rate, if Bryce does not render curves or do wireframes then it probably means that you just can't use Bryce to get what you need. If you need to do something that Bryce does not do, you will need to use a different rendering program instead.

You may want to also check in a Bryce discussion forum as well though, maybe there are other kinds of workarounds or other things that a community of Bryce users could tell you about to help you solve your problem.
