WOW - the beta mesher is great

Hi Michael,

I bought MOI3D and I'm impressed by the beta mesher - phantastic!!!

I tried to open a 80MB STEP file per Rhino - it never finished the job. Also I tried it per other CAD software - extrem slow. The MOI3D beta opened it in few minutes only. Great.

Some wishes for v2:

* multicore support for opening files (the STEP file import CPU usage was 25% at my Quadcore)

* the mesher should not start befor the user confirm the parameters or the user should be able to stop the meshing (simple solution per ESC button)

* a max error option for the mesher

* a 64bit version

Ciao,
Micha

Hi Micha, thanks very much for your order and I'm glad that MoI has helped you out on a task already!

One quick note - by default MoI is set up to make a dense display mesh to make for a very smooth looking display.

However, if you're working on a pretty large (like over 10MB) model, these dense display meshes can take up quite a bit of memory and it is better to switch a setting to get a rougher display mesh instead (this only affects display and not export).

To do that go to Options / View / Meshing parameters, and switch "Mesh angle" to 20 degrees, and uncheck "Add detail to inflections".

With those settings you will get a coarser display but it will keep memory consumption down by a considerable amount with heavier files.

re: Your wishes

I do plan on getting the display mesh generation to also be multicore, which will help for one portion of file opening. Probably not for this very next beta but before v2 is finished.

But it isn't going to be very easy to make the part that actually reads through the file to be multicore, that is done by a library that I license and it will take some time before that part is multi-core capable.

Both of these I should be able to do for the next v2 beta I think.

> * a 64bit version

Unfortunately it will probably be a while before I can do this one, it is a pretty big piece of work. I don't expect to have this one done for v2. I'm not quite sure when this will happen yet.

Thanks very much for your feedback!

- Michael

Six degrees of separation.

Hey guys. You do not know me but I know some of you from C4D, VrayForC4D, Maxwell, Fry and beyond. I go by nycL45, leoA4D or Leonard. All of you have done very nice work and I look forward to seeing what you do with Moi.

Hello Michael,

yesterday I run in the problem, that a long light swinged part of a complex model needs to be meshed. The angle parameter at angle 4° was not the best, but ok. In this moment I missed the max error option. OK, I could use a lower angle or the divide option for curved parts, but this would add to much unwanted polygons. Could you still add the max error option please? You was quite optimistic for that option in the february. ;)

Hi Micha,

> Could you still add the max error option please?

Yes, it is definitely still on my list of things to add, I'm just not very confident right now about getting in to v2, it will most likely be a v3 thing.

> You was quite optimistic for that option in the february. ;)

Yup, but that was before all the work on Styles took much longer than I had initially thought.

Also don't forget that there were a lot of other improvements and bug fixes that you asked for in this previous thread:
http://moi3d.com/forum/index.php?webtag=MOI&msg=2451.1
which did get implemented, those also took quite a bit of time as well.

Maybe you get it v2 or v2.1. You know, the "v2 meshing release" thing ... ;)

Thank you,
Micha

Hi Micha, probably not for v2.0 and currently I don't plan on having a v2.1 .

Once v2.0 is wrapped up, I'll be moving on to v3 and there will then be betas for that version available.

There will not likely be a v2.1 unless there are some major bugs found in v2.0 that need to be corrected.

Please keep in mind that I am only a single person working on MoI, which means that I have to try and be efficient at how I spend my time.

It takes additional effort to do things like attempt to work on a version 2.1 and a version 3.0 at the same time. That's why when 2.0 is wrapped up the general plan is that I'm on to version 3 work at that point.

But don't worry though - MoI v2 is not the end of the line, I want to add a lot of new stuff in for v3! :)

Hi Micha, also the good news is that there have already been so many improvements to meshing in v2 that it is really a major meshing release already!

Not only a bunch of things you specifically asked for in that previous thread:
http://moi3d.com/forum/index.php?webtag=MOI&msg=2451.1

but also there was a huge improvement to meshing speed in v2 since it is now multi-core enabled!

Of course there will still be improvements in the future, but there's no doubt that v2 is a very major step for meshing in MoI.

We know where you're at with V2, I feel a little excitement in the above comment, any clues for the road map for V3........something........anything!

A road map would be nice Michael - it would be a way of seeing what features you'd like MoI to have in the future.

It would also give us a way to see your plans plus fine tune our expectations and target our suggestions in the same direction...

Yep - V2 is looking and working very well for me. My credit card is ready when it's available for purchase.

The wish list is quite long, and I'm also curious what the focus areas are for V3.

I have my own short wish list, but I'll wait to see if specific V3 inputs are requested.
