If I may just say something, you should try to avoid multiple lights shadow (I count 3 shadows with different softness). Usually one shadow light is enough.
Btw here's a couple of hdr studio, that you can place as environment map (and maybe disable them from the camera view), and activate the radiosity.
So you can get nice reflection on the surfaces.

There should only be 2 main shadows from 2 spots. Anything else comes from the lights and glows on the on the desk. I am hoping to build a room around the whole thing at which point the lighting will get a thorough going over. Thanks for the advice anyway.

Hi all, more work on the Brain Amplifier over the last couple of days. I've finished the emitters now and moved onto the chair. Not too happy with the red cables on the floor. They look too much like red licorice strings :-)
Here's a shot of the whole thing so far. I wasn't too happy with the original cushions on the chair - they came out a bit too angular for my liking. So, I redid them in modo.
