Hi Brian, here is a technique to draw a diamond shape. Basically you want to set up some lines in a repeatable pattern, and use Construct/Planar to fill in planar surfaces between some sets of those lines.

This example is probably a pretty poor diamond, but it should get the technique across:

Download video (2MB) or play below:

Hope this helps!

The famous 82-carat Rohde diamond!

If you had a real one like that you could probably buy a lot of beers with it. :)

hi brian,

if you really want to dig into gemstone design, be sure to check out this website:

http://www.rockhounds.com/rockshop/gem_designs/design_index.shtml

a rather amazing collection..

actually, i did a prototype based on such a design...(and with the help of moi)..

workflow would be something like this:

gemcad->rhino(dxf to 3dm)->moi->pepakura->cutout model..fiddling around with some foils and fresnel-things

cheers,
marco

Hi Brian,

Here's a 3DM file of a Diamond from one of the Rhino jewellery Plugin's I've got.
I'm also including a picture that contains the angles & proportions that are used for cutting an "Ideal Diamond".

Here's a link that might also prove useful.
http://www.preciousmetals.com.au/

Hope all of this is of help, Colin

Yannada (Michael?)

Those 3DM Rhino files (3dlapidary) do not open in MoI?
(OK in Carrara)

Any explanations?

Hi Brian,

> Those 3DM Rhino files (3dlapidary) do not open in MoI?

That usually means that the objects inside of the 3DM file were polygon mesh objects and not NURBS objects.

There are various different kinds of things that can be stored in a 3DM file such as NURBS objects, polygon meshes, spotlights, dimensions, etc....

MoI only deals with NURBS and single point objects, it will skip any polygon mesh objects that are in the file and I think those particular files only have those kinds of objects in them.

Those polygon mesh objects can be converted in Rhino into NURBS objects by using the meshtonurb command on them. That conversion will allow MoI to read in those objects.

If you want to do accurate jewel stone modeling you need a cut sheet. It will give you the proper angle/dimensions for a particular cut of precious stone.

See this post for pics and an example file.
