Seems your object is at the limite of the Univers!
Why not center it on the grid and not on the sky!
Maybe your export is fine but you don't see any thing because scale is out order!

hi again..

you could use the following method, if you still need to have it converted..

# select and join the inner surfaces.

# copy this new surface and give it a good shelling (2 units / normal). exports fine now..

i 've attached the part..just check, if everything is in order and as it should be..

cheers,
marco

True Frenchy Pilou but the parts not shown are about double this in length and significantly more complex!
Thanks for looking at it though, I really appreciate the quick look and ideas...I'll see if scaling it to more normal dimensions makes life easier.

coi,
Wow, you are on to something there, I did some crazy Boolean operations and such...I can't believe I didn't think to turn on the points for a view.
Thanks,
David

Marco,

Thank you, Thank you...

I tried what you suggested, or should I say taught me! I was unfamiliar with this type of usage for the separate tool. Very nice now, no more program hanging for two minutes during an export before this portion of the mesh disappears...

hi david!

you are welcome..

but one thing puzzles me..this "new" part looks still quite weird, if you separate it and turn on the points..so the real cause for the non-export-behaviour must be somehow related to the solid. may be some gaps..its really hard to tell. hopefully michael will come up with an ultra-clever explanation.

marco

It certainly looks like a bug, I'm taking a closer look.

At first glance those extended control points seem fine since those are probably just the remaining underlying surfaces of a much larger piece that they were cut out from.

There are a couple of small slivered surface remnants in there, I think those may be the culprits, but I'll know more in a bit.

Hi David - yeah, the bug involved one of the little slivery surfaces.

One mechanism was getting confused and was trying to subdivide an already tiny bit into 16 million even smaller pieces which is why there was a delay there. Then eventually there isn't enough memory to hold all the pieces and that would cause it to bail.

I've fixed this bug up for the next v2 beta, so that this model will now export fine.

Do you still need this part exported right now? If so, let me know what meshing parameters you would like and I can post a mesh for you. But it sounds like you have an alternate construction that works already? Also it should only be a couple more days here before the next v2 beta is out which has the fix.

The model itself is fine actually, those control points sticking a ways out are just a normal thing from having booleaned those out from a larger original piece. If you want to shrink those in, you can do that by setting up a keyboard shortcut for the "ShrinkTrimmedSrf" command which does not have a button set up for it. If you run that on your model it will shrink the surfaces down so that they hug the current cut out portion more directly.

Thanks for posting the example file, that really helps a lot for tracking the problem down!

- Michael

Hi Michael,

Thanks for taking a look at the file and providing the explanation. I'm glad it was a bug you could isolate and exterminate, this was the first mesh that would not export for me...my assumption was that I had made a mistake since I had booleaned that part more times than I could put a number on.

Thanks for your offer to get it exported but I'm fine now; Coi's advice did the trick for me on this project. This piece had been revised about 6 more times so this was actually the first iteration or version that had the bug. I followed Coi's workaround on the final design and it worked fine.

I'm looking forward to the new beta, the program is a dream to use...as you add features it just gets better & better.

Thanks again,
David

Thanks David, I'm glad that the new stuff in v2 is helping out!

Still more stuff to come! :)
