Hey guys,
was the lighting issue ever addressed
ie. rotating around model in perspective view, the model falls into
complete darkness - disrupting ones mental view of shape...

Let me know,
thanks
Mike

ToggleLightDirection – toggles the light direction, between the standard and alternate one.

F6 script:var dir = moi.view.lightDirection; if ( dir.x == 1 && dir.y == 1 && dir.z == -1 ) { dir.set(-0.5,1,0); } else { dir.set(1,1,-1); } moi.view.lightDirection = dir;

Good, cause I definitely needed this the other day!

I wish there was a simple "enable headlight" toggle similar to XSI's...

Hi Mike, yeah the way to deal with that right now is to set up the script that Nick shows there on a keyboard shortcut.

They if you have a situation where a piece that you are focused on is in darkness, press that shortcut key to flip the light direction around and different areas of your object will be illuminated.

I do have some ideas on adding new lighting options in later on for v2, I just have not had a chance to get to that part of v2 yet though.

Hey Michael, not to go on and on about this...
but seriously... how hard would it be to attach the light to the camera?
is it an "updating" issue with the graphics card or something?

""attach the light to the camera?""

This could be a good idea as an option or a script.

Hi Mike,

> but seriously... how hard would it be to attach the light to the camera?

It is actually already attached to the camera - the light always follows the camera and is positioned by default to come from an angle kind of above and to the left of the camera.

If you would like to position the light so that it is going straight forward along the exact same direction as the camera and not slanted, that is possible by using this keyboard shortcut:
code:
script:var dir = moi.view.lightDirection; if ( dir.x == 1 && dir.y == 1 && dir.z == -1 ) { dir.set(0,1,0); } else { dir.set(1,1,-1); } moi.view.lightDirection = dir;

Assign a shortcut key to that script and then when you push that key, it will toggle between the default "above, left" direction and the totally straight forward direction.

The "straight forward" lighting tends to be a somewhat harsher feel for lighting, that's why it is not the default, but you can set it up like that if you want.

In reply to 1954.7 - Really? I would think it would not have good shadows, so the object shape will look very flat...

Woww, I was using the flip lighting scipt so far, but this last one fit much better my needs, probably models are looking more 'flat', but it's much better for my poor eyes as I don't have huge dark area in my models anymore.

Thanks !!!

Jonah,
this is what I'm used to with every modelling app. I have ever used.
with the light setup straight on the model from every angle,
I am able to see the model more clearly in my head, shapes, curves...
if I want nice shadows and soft lighting, I'll use my rendering software :)

Would someone mind to post an example of a wavy surface viewed "straight on", and also viewed at a few different angles? I am curious what the result is.

Thanks,
jonah

Sure, here is a quick one.
As you can see, the straigt on shows the highs and lows viewing white and black areas... not as pretty,
but in this "rare" case, one can still see this better in the camera view window when moving around the image
to check shape.

Everybody has their own preference. But for me, this is misleading feedback. Because you are getting nearly identical highlights in both the valleys and peaks, due to lack of shadows in the valleys. Also the shadows are going in opposite directions. On left side of the surface, they fall on left side of the peaks. On right side of the surface, they fall on right side of the peaks. There's nothing wrong with it. But it's somewhat unnatural to me...
