Just want to inform you that after Caligari has been taken over by Microsoft this
year they have finished the new update and the fantastic news is that IT IS FREE FOR ALL !
You can now import your moi 3d files into a realtime render engine with full procedural animation support at NO charge.
Vray still costs something but its the easiest way to get vray support now !

Hope that is good news for some of you !

WOW! Sorry to see trueSpace go the way of the Dodo!

trueSPACE was the first 3D app I cut my teeth on, I stuck with it all the way up to v4.3 before I jumped off. It set the foundation of my learning modeling texturing and animation. Everything else I had tried before was buggy and sux'd!

Just have to wonder about Microsoft sometimes!

Hi Will - I don't think that it is being discontinued, more like being subsidized by Microsoft and now freely available.

Peter - I downloaded it to see if it would work well as an option to render MoI files. It looks like it could possibly be, but I can't seem to find any way to load standard mesh file types like an .obj file.

After a bit of puzzled poking around, I found a small "File" menu in the upper-right corner, but it doesn't seem to have Wavefront .obj files listed in the file drop-down there.

Do you know if this free version has had file import capabilities removed from it?

TrueSpace was the very first 3D app I purchased, about 5 years ago. The worst UI I have ever seen in a program. Have to say though some folks produced some very nice renders with it (folks that have more patience and time than me).

Even with the "free" offer I won't waste my time again. My time = money and I'll gladly pay for an app that makes me productive. That's why I have MoI and HyperShot.

Well going the way of the Dodo is a little bit untrue.....
They also introduced the new sdk !
So it should have pretty much impact on what will and can be made
by 3d party ! And honestly the Ui of TS 7.6 is much more user friendly then that of Blender.
Some of the users are already posting about making fluid sims like that in Blender so I think
its not going down !
microsoft has pretty deep pockets and with the background of Virtual Earth content creation
its going to be pretty interesting !
There will be a Kerkythea exporter pretty soon and thatsm going to be a very good way of getting
animations rendered in photorealistic quality !
you pay around 2000 - 3000 $ for any of the big packs plus Maxwell and
Truespace with Kerkythea at nothing (with procedural animation) is realy interesting !
We might even get a 3dm import ?!

Hi Michael !
You should be able to load them from the model side via the plugin LUUV and save them too !
Thats the way Truespace loads and saves obj. !!
Thats how we always imported and exported and that always worked well !
but there is a new SDK and there are some nurbs tools including bend etc.
so it would be a dream to have an exporter-importer with 3dm !

Hi Peter, what is LUUV? (almost sounds like a philosophical question... ;) )

I didn't see anything named LUUV but after poking on everything in sight, I did find a little button that said "TS6 Files" which seems to have Load > Object sub-menu on it.

Is that the right spot? That seems to work.

I'm kind of surprised that the model load is not under the "File" menu...

I'm not really so sure that this will really work so well for a really wide number of people for rendering, having it difficult to just import a file is kind of a problem thing.

But it certainly is cool to have a wide variety of functionality freely available.

Michael !
Very easy ! you found that one way of loading files is to hit the model tab and go to the model side
and there you have the TS 6 files menu with load !
The way to load with luuv is only for object and is very simple !
You go down to the middle of the screen where you find the icon with a plug... you hit that
and a menu pops up with open truespace extension !
Search in TSX folder there you find a folder with the name LUUV..
You click on that luuv.tsx file and an icon gets loaded into the toolbar that always should stay there
everytime you open Truespace. Its an icon with obj. on it ! When you click on it it opens obj formats
and when you alt click on it you save obj. format !
Eventualy all the file loading etc will be in workspace and very easy but TS is still in transition from legacy - old model side
to new workspace side.
When you have loaded the object in model side you can switch to workspace tab and there you have realtime display and realtime shaders etc. and animation etc.
Model side is only for loading and modeling with the old tools.....
Hope that helps !
Peter

Hi Peter, that definitely helps! But that's kind of like a tutorial that's needed just for opening files, unfortunately that adds a pretty big barrier to a lot of people who might just want to use trueSpace as a quick way to render models.

I'm sure it gets easier the more you do it!

But that will probably frustrate quite a few people who just want to get some simple stuff done without digging into all the other stuff that is available in trueSpace.

Don't get me wrong, there is definitely a lot of cool stuff in there, but it seems to me that people should generally expect that it will take some time to learn how to work all that stuff.

maybe against the 299 $ for V-Ray plug you can try the 35$ of 3Dlight plug ;)
and carreful
"The other good news is that bugs were plaguing vray for truespace have also been fixed. However, it should be mentioned that this isn't a full-blown vray, like what you may be used to in max for example. It has the features, but not the options. It still has the lush vray look."

About nurbs there are some plugs for add power to it
http://home.mindspring.com/%7Eclintonr/MyTruespace/nurbs/nurbs.html

@Michael : it's not a Demo version of True Space! It's the last release as I undestand ! ;)

Michael your right I´m not Truespaces advocate so
there are a lot of things to be improved but loading a plug is one of the easiest
things in TS and you only have to do it one time .
I just wanted to pass the news on ... because people like freebees.
Blender is one of the only full blown packages that I know of that
are free and one needs a doctors degree to keep all the shortcuts in that.
Although Blender is a beauty !
I hope that now that TS is free we will see many people who will
help improve the workflow and ad to functionality including fast and easy
file formats.....
We all here do most of our modeling in moi 3d anyways !
so its for the subd and for renderings .....

When I say Dodo I'm thinking of what Microsoft did to Creature House's Expression - they bought that and it was never the same again for the close nit band of dedicated users. Especially Living-Cels which had potential as a great 2D animation platform.

Actually I think it's cool that Microsoft does stuff like this since they do have so much money in their pockets.

I certainly would have never purchased tS again but I will definitely take the time to install v7 and reacquaint myself with the changes since v4. It should be a nice addition to the 3D toolbox...

THIS re-affirms MoI in it's vision.

Microsoft bought a product I used to use and now you cant buy it unless you are corporate account holder with ongoing contract. Since they made this free, I'm sure they just bought some technology that they wanted to integrate into the next OS.

Go MoI go!
