Here`s my first work done with MOI.
It`s not textured yet, but i will do that when i have time.I will use Bodypaint for that.
Lightning is a bit dark and yellowish but kind of like it.
Hope you too.

Cheers
Dirk

Hi Dirk,

Nice. I like it

I will first ask as to what renderer you used?

If I may comment?

I need to question the shadows and light reflections I see, as from the shadows from the balcony rails, there is a light source placed not shown. Similarly with some of the reflected light from the floor. You have possibly added lights for the scene but not disabled shadow casting/reflectance, but am uncertain at this time.

It would also be good to see something on the right hand side wall, as it looks a little bare.

Please dont think I am criticizing, it is just when I see a very nice image, such as you post, I like to look a long time, and that is when questions may appear.

Keep up the good work,

- manz

Thanks for your nice comments.

@manz
in this scene the only lightsources are these that you can see. 10 lamps and the lightsource at the ground below the grate.
This was done in Fryrender but Mawell is showing an identic result.
When i`ve textured the scene, maybe the wall on the righthandside will look more interesting.
If not, i will have to add something ;).

"Please dont think I am criticizing"

Absolutely no problem.

Cheers
Dirk

Dirk

Like manz, I just love your image--and I can not keep my eyes off it either.
The potentials for the texturing------wow! (AND lighting alternatives!)

IF, at any time, you want to consider your 3dm file as an object for say a shading/lighting "competition" exercise for MoI users!

If you care to work through this thread it gives a great learning experience about how different people work on the same supplied 3D file.

So here comes the final image. I`ve rendered also an ambient occlusion pass and combined them in Photoshop,
which gives a nice sharpening effect.

Hope you like it

"IF, at any time, you want to consider your 3dm file as an object for say a shading/lighting "competition" exercise for MoI users!"

I will think about it, but there are some things to consider:

It is my first MOI-work, so i`ve done many mistakes during modeling. There are some objects i`ve planned to merge but it wasn`t possible
because of modeling-mistakes. The object count is fairly high i think with round about 230 objects.

Then i modeled the grates instead of using simply a texture. As result the scene-handling got very slow and i think i have a good grafic-card (8800GT), but for other users it may be impossible to navigate in the scene.

Also the scene is very huge (163 MB) and i`ve only a very small upstream and generating the polygons of the scene does take nearly 10 minutes.

I think a simpler scene would be more appropriate.

Greetings
Dirk

Hi Dirk,

Yes, I like the lighting much better on that render.

I only have a slight problem, that is the ladder. It appears to be stuck directly to the wall, I was just thinking that it would be quite difficult to climb as you would not be able to get your feet in there.

Excellent work.

Agree with Manz Dirk.
Great render.

If the idea of a model for others to be challeneged to try rendering ideas---made by anyone! in MoI--eventuates, it could be a good learning exercise.

Wonderfully textured render - also, great catch about the ladder, I didn't even notice that at first! :-p

Once that's fixed, head straight for the gallery!

Hi Dirk, it turned out great & gritty! Love the way the texturing and lighting turned out.

Since the holes in the grating are not very large in the render, it seems like you could have had a texture for that without really making a noticeable impact on the scene. That would definitely help keep scene density and poly count a lot more under control.

yeah the ladder. :-)

I have hoped no one would notice that. I noticed it after 5 hours of rendering.
O.k. I`ll have to change that.
Thanks god, that my lamps and the balustrade are so bad visible.;-)
They are looking cool as long as you aren`t an engineer.
They were build in a parallel-universe with more forgiving physical laws.

Thank you all for your nice comments :-)

Cheers

Hi Dirk,

>>I have hoped no one would notice that. I noticed it after 5 hours of rendering.

I thought I would mention, really because that is the only part that looks "not quite right", other than that, it is a very good render.
I am certainly interested is being able to produce such materials (as yours) onto a model,... I do tend to give up with materials/renders and move to another model.

>>Thanks god, that my lamps and the balustrade are so bad visible.;-)

The render looks ok in that area, maybe just the problems you had with construction give you concern?

>>They were build in a parallel-universe with more forgiving physical laws.

Just a need for very small feet lol

I look forward to any other work you produce and post.

Regards,

- manz

Hi manz,

yesterday i made some material tests to see what helps making a material looking good. Here is the result.

1.)Most important is a good lightning.
Using a physical sky or a hdri is a good way to achieve that and of course using global illumination.
A bad lightning situation destroys an image. There has to be bright areas and dark areas(shadows).

2.)not less important is the use of high quality texures. This is a bit trial and error. What looks good in this renderengine doesn`t look good in that one. The bump map is important when the mainlight is not coming from behind, which it shouldn`t do in any case, because this destroys threedimensionality.
The bumpmap has to fit the colormap. Often that is not possible and it looks odd. I do my bumpmaps in photoshop using the highpassfilter and sometimes painting in some darker areas where should be the bumps.
A reflection or specularmap is also important, because as a result you have reflective and nonereflective areas. Using fresnel effect for reflective surfaces also does a good job. Please look here:

http://moi3d.com/forum/index.php?webtag=MOI&msg=1568.46

3.) i give every material reflective properties. Often very low and blurry. It`s also here a bit trial and error.

I think these are the most important things i pay attention to.

Greetings
Dirk

Hi Dirk,

>>Most important is a good lightning.

Yes, it is an area I am currently spending time with, certainly with GI.

>>not less important is the use of high quality texures.

As I mentioned, that is what I can have problems with. Did you use a real_world texture for your render (such as photos) or was it (possibly) a procedural texture. I do attempt to create a texture rather than using a photo etc, using such as MaPZone ( http://www.mapzoneeditor.com/?PAGE=HOME ), I am getter better, but it will take time.
