Hello everyone,

I'm actually building a robotic claw, inspired from an hard drive device (it's for a western digital contest).
Here's a little preview :

That's for the little story.

I was fitghting now a little bit to close a surface, a 6 branchs fillet star. Here's a view ...

Well I know it's a weird surface. I also know I will lost continuity everywhere (I don't really care, it's a really small detail), but if someone can still give me some help/advice/tips about the best way to doing it, I'm listening :)

I have attached the file is someone has some time to lost :o)

Thanks a lot.

Hi PaQ,

This is my attempt before I go to bed. If this is what you want, it's something like extract some edges blend them make sweep,
then extract more edges, blend with buldge @ 0.35 I think then project this onto other sweep, then sweep these then trim the 2 rads
to each other -> done.
sorry for the bad explanation, if no one explains it better I'll let you know in about 7 or so hours, sorry need sleep.....zzzzzzzzzz.

~Danny~

By the way, nice model, I knew inside computers were evil !!

A simple sweep?
Curiously the inverse gives not a such sweet result :) (Start / End as rail1 & 2)

Hi PaQ. Here is the solid form. I don't think there's a solution for this right now in MoI. So I used Rhino's Patch tool to make the surfaces. I hope you don't mind :)

Hello Danny and Pilou !
Thanks to taking of you time :)

Well so far I had nothing better than Danny.
I think a have tried every combo of sweep and network, with many in between curves test ... but I didn't think about your version Pilou. The result was good enough for me.

That's said I give up and I've burned one of my save credit in rhino (only 3 left :P).
Looks like the patch command give a nice result for this kind of surface ... (something to add in my wish list :o))

I was thinking that patch and network were somehow the same, but I was wrong :P

Voila.

Thanks for you help again !

(Having a lot of fun with Moi as usuall ...)

Hi PaQ, if you have something like that all joined together before filleting, you can use the edge filleter to do it, it will create a kind of star fill in that area, like this:

But if you are modeling at a kind of lower level than that surface by surface, it will be a lot harder to get it done. Really it needs a Patch tool to do it well.

Patch is a lot different than Network, what Patch does is start by fitting a plane (that has many interior points in it, not just 4 corner points) through the curves, then starts pulling those points up and down from the plane to morph the plane into passing through the curves.

I would definitely like to add this into MoI in the future, but it is just a pretty finicky thing to make work well.

For now if you had to stay totally inside of MoI the way that Pilou shows of dividing things into 4-sided regions is pretty much the way that you would have to do it now.

- Michael

Complex thing :)
Maybe it's not enough metallic in the render?

Hi PaQ - wow that is looking great! Lots of interesting details in there.

Is this whole thing just one articulated finger of the final robot? Or is that more like a whole arm of it?

it's just a finger, and the final image will be just 3 fingers (claws) in fact =)

Thanks for you comments.

Here's an update ...

I really like the dynamic this motion blur is giving, however I get some friends negative feedback. Indeed I'm losing
a lot of the model details ... I will probably give an other try later.

And a dark version (still in rendering) ... looks cool like that, I think I'll keep this version for now ...
Still have some typo work to do on it, and I have to work on the background a little bit.

Cheers.

Thanks a lot guys :)

Mostly finished ... (still want to compose a motion blured layer over it, not sure how to do it to have a nice effect without washing the details to much).

I really like that last render.

Is this the new Ginsu Drive I've been hearing about? "But wait, there's more! Stays razor sharp after shredding Gigabytes of data."
