Layers are very, very easy in Carrara.
Do a search of your Help file and you will find plenty of good documentation and, I think, a little tute as well.

The main question is with concern to the "rectangle shader tool"

There is only one small section on the "Layer shader tools" (that I have found).

I have just had a play, and it can be very unpredictable.

Thanks everybody! moi is great and so is the community. The links are very helpful and its good to know that the layers tool is unpredictable as I had thought it was just me. Yesterday I had a play about with a model airplane that I have made an I noticed that the structure of the mesh is very important for making surfaces smooth. I therefor think it might be important to learn more about Moi's export options.

Generally the most simple way to get a smoother mesh is to move that slider over towards the right a bit to generate a denser mesh with smaller polygons.

Hi Keith,

Something I had missed, was a note made, that imported objects may require a UV map made in Carrara "before" attempting rectangle layer.
