3D "modeling from life" primer?

Hi, there,

I often see others using plans and photos to model real life objects - cars, trains, etc. - and I'm sure that there's a generic modeling process no matter what modeler you use, but as a newbie to 3D I'm at a loss of how to use photos, plans, etc, to actually model from.

Does anyone know of any generic modeling tutorials that describe how to take the different plan/photo views and make an accurate model from them?

Thank you, and sorry to bother anyone if this is obvious or was already discussed.

Have a good weekend, everyone,

- A

I'm sure someone here will post links to Rhino tutorials.

This site has some good information:

Look the first article
http://www.onnovanbraam.com/index.php?tutorials/
It's can be the same in Moi (more easy of course)
Just Menu View / Image /add...in each view Front Top etc...
so you obtain all images in the 3D view in the same time!
And after juste modelize over these helpers images!
You can go back in the Menu View for hide or not some images or change properties

you have a lot of tutorial here http://www.rhino3d.com/tutorials.htm
(advantages you can reload the 3Dm files format in Moi !

Hi angeliclight,

If you have a digital camera, you would be better to start with a simple object you have in the house. I know there are blueprints etc around the web, but these will not always show all the info needed, even photo`s available for download are limited to those views and can cause headaches.

As for "generic modeling", well I would agree that there are some rules, or should I say certain directions are better than others, but how one user may model is not always the same as the next, but both may well produce good models.

I have followed a number of tutorials, and yes, they do give good info, but I normally just take the good info, then use this with the way I already work with the application I am using.
I can understand you feeling a little lost at the moment on how to start, and we have all been there, but after a time, you will find your own way to model.

I have been using cad/cam for a long time (since autocad version 2), but I am still learning each day.

If you do find or take pics of a model, then post them here, we can then help each other, it would also be interesting to see how different users go about starting/creating.
