Revolve

Hi Michael,

Is there a way to change the default input/interaction for Revolve?

Currently it is a case of "select curves to revolve" then (basically) a single option for the angle/center. As when you select the center_axis the revolve is made.

I would ask (if possible) for the ability to "select curves to resolve", then "select revolve axis", then an interaction for the angle (as example, we see for the creation of fillet/chamfer.)

To push such a request further, maybe a start/ end angle?(on_screen interaction by mouse) This maybe more a case for version 2 (if not possible by scripts in current version?)

Regards,
Steve

Edit,
Forgot to mention, I notice that currently a negative value cannot be entered, so revolve is allowed in only one direction, so could direction be added at some time?

Hi Steve, I think it should be possible to build a custom Revolve command that will do at least some of this, maybe all - give me a while and I will see if I can cook one up later tonight.

Hi Michael,

No rush at all. If it is possible, and if/when you have time, it would be excellent.
I can certainly work around this very easily.

Regards,
Steve

Hi Steve, I've attached a new version of Revolve here.

To install it, unzip it and copy the 2 files (Revolve.htm and Revolve.js) over top of the old versions inside of the \commands subfolder in MoI's main installation folder.

This should give you a Revolve command that handles your requests (except for the setting angles with the mouse part, I'm afraid that one will need to wait until later sometime) - you can mess with the angles in another stage after picking the axis, and you can also set a start and end angle, and use negative values.

Here's an example:

The revolve will start at the given "Start angle", then move in a positive angular direction ("right hand rule") until it reaches the End angle. If you want the opposite piece of what you currently have, that is possible by swapping your start and end angles with each other.

The only downside is that with this version in place, a simple 360 degree revolve will take one additional step, because you will now have to push "Done" (or right-click) to accept the values instead of it getting built immediately.

That is the same if you make a "Boolean Merge" from top view with 2 lines perpandicular?

Hi Pilou,

Yup, that is the same shape as if you were to draw some lines in the top view at those particular angles and cut the full revolve with them.
