Hi Everyone,

Great to hear that MoI V1 has been released. Looking forward to getting my copy ( as a birthday present :) ) in the next week or so. Until then, I thought I might show a progress shot of a boat I'm modeling with the beta.

I have spent very little time on this. Moi is easily the fastest modeler I've used.

Looks great - really nice clean lines! It would be fun to see update shots as you make progress.

Thanks Michael. I will definitely update my progress. Creating a hull with MoI is just too easy. I could cry when I think about the countless hours I've wasted on creating polygonal hulls, even sds smoothed ones. I'm also *very* impressed with the quality of the boolean tools and the stability of the program. Not a single crash in the whole time I've been learning to use it. Impressive.

The boat now has a wheel, based on a 200 by 150 pixel jpeg.

I have no idea how the wheel should mount so its position is just a guess

Some more progress. I completely re-did the cabin. Now has the drop down well into the cabin but no door. I can't find a picture for that and haven't decided how to proceed. I've also added the little struts for the propellor shaft and the bump rail things (which must have a proper name I'm sure...) that run down the sides of the hull.

I wish I had a line drawing for that boat Pilou. It has a very pretty shape.

More progress...

Made changes to the cabin, added railings and some other small things.

Next I'm going to try the prop. That should be fun!

It's amazing how much more real it looks with the railings.

Every step looks better and better, looking forward to seeing more stages!

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all don't mind me resurrecting an old thread. Having finally bought my copy of MoI, I decided to restart my trial practice model and for once, maybe, actually finish something.

My computer and its consumer grade video card is starting to struggle to move the model around. I noticed that grouping of objects seems to be available in V2. If I use the object grouping, will that allow me to hide/unhide groups of objects? Will the model still load in V1?

Hi Mark, welcome to the world of MoI ownership.

>> and for once, maybe, actually finish something

LOL I know this feeling :-)

>> My computer and its consumer grade video card is starting to struggle to move the model around.

Go to the options, view tab and increase the mesh angle. This decreases the resolution of the display to speed it up. Play with the setting to find the best compromise for your model and your system. Also display hidden lines slows things down, so turn that off if you don't need it.

You can turn the edges off as well. Paste this into a shortcut - I use CNTRL-H

script:var gd = moi.geometryDatabase; var breps = gd.getSelectedObjects().getBReps(); if ( breps.length == 0 ) breps = gd.getObjects().getBReps(); var hide = true; for ( var i = 0; i < breps.length; ++i ) { var edges = breps.item(i).getEdges(); if ( i == 0 ) hide = !edges.item(0).hidden; edges.setProperty( 'hidden', hide ); }

It will turn edges on and off for selected objects or all objects if nothing is selected. This also speeds things up.

Another thing I do is have another instance of MoI open. Copy the parts you're working on into the second MoI and copy back to the main file when done. I regularly have 3 or 4 MoIs open at once.>>I noticed that grouping of objects seems to be available in V2. If I use the object grouping, will that allow me to

>> hide/unhide groups of objects? Will the model still load in V1?

Grouping isn't available in V2 yet (unless I've missed a beta). But at the moment files created in V2 seem to be backward compatible with no problem.

Regards
Tony

Hi Tony,

Many thanks for the tips. I had turned off display hidden lines but didn't know about the mesh angle thing. That has made a big difference. I'll keep the other tips in reserve as my card starts to struggle again.

> Grouping isn't available in V2 yet ....

I must have misunderstood the object naming thing. Haven't tried it yet because I was concerned my files might not reopen in V1.

I'm glad to hear I'm not the only one with unfinished projects!

Mark

The object naming part is basically one chunk of stuff for grouping, but it's basically just one minor piece of the puzzle with some more stuff coming here to really do the whole job.

re: opening in v1 - that is a big priority to make files that you save out of MoI v2 still be openable in version 1.0 . V1 may skip newer settings and properties and things that it does not know about, but geometry will go over fine.
