Messerschmitt Libelle

Here's my first model with MoI. It's a Messerschmitt Libelle, an experimental design that never got off the drawing boards. If the war had continued another year or two our pilots may have encountered these things.

The most difficult part to model was the air intake. It took me two evenings just to get that right. The rest of the model went pretty quickly. I've started creating textures for it. I'm still not sure what I'm going to render it in. I used to always render my planes in Bryce, but I've had problems getting this model to load properly. It wants to load as one big object instead of separate pieces, even in OBJ format. I've tried Terragen 2, but getting textures to load properly in that app is a pain. I might try Blender.

Hi Steve, cool model! Thanks for posting it.

I've never heard of this jet design before, it has a very interesting modern feel to it. I would never have guessed that it was an early design.

re: OBJ format problems - try using this SeparateOBJ.exe utility program: http://moi3d.com/wiki/Resources#SeparateOBJ_editor .

It can re-organize .obj files that you export from MoI to help some programs recognize different pieces for material assignments.

Mike, thanks for responding and thanks for the link. I'll try it out.

The Germans had a bunch of wild designs in the works when the war ended. The advent of jet engines opened up a lot of possibilities as far as design went. They weren't constrained to putting a propeller on the nose of the plane. Check out the 3D models at Luft46. http://www.luft46.com/luftart.html I've started on a Horten 229 flying wing. That plane was decades ahead of its time.

As for being my first model, I do have some experience modeling in Rhino, so that helped.

Thanks, Mike. It looks like that OBJ utility worked.

some of them are really "obscure"... aka "everyone, except the bumblebee itself, knows that a bumblebee can't fly"

Great model!

Thanks for the Luftwaffe concept planes link, very interesting.
Certain models appears to come straight out of the thunderbirds tv series. :)

Amongst others, I really liked this Messerschmitt Me P.1079 13b render:

Have you tried the Il-2 sturmovik simulator series?
Very good stuff...

Regards,

Marc
