Is STEP import coming?

Michael,

I was wondering if STEP import is being considered for Moi3d. I assume it requires you to purchase an another module from IntegrityWare. I would have no problem paying a additional reasonable end-user cost if it makes business sense for you to go the add-on route.

Hi Al, STEP is something that I would like to add in for version 2.0 .

I haven't figured out yet if it will be built in or some kind of add-on. There are a couple of other things other than just licensing cost that can factor into that, like if it increases download size by very much.

But most likely it will just be built in directly to v2.

I have added this to the Wiki wishlist page: http://moi3d.com/wiki/Wishlist so I can keep track of it better.

Hi Al,

MoI can import/export IGES file.... to translate STEP file to IGES or vice versa you can use iges2step converter/viewer. See http://iges2step.narod.ru/

quote:

IGES2STEP is a freeware CAD file viewer for Windows XP/2000/NT. It allows viewing IGES and STEP files and translating between them. The versions of the formats are:
IGES: up to 5.3
STEP AP203: Mechanical Design (General 3D CAD)
STEP AP214: Automotive Design
STEP AP209: Finite-Element Analysis (initial support)

I downloaded and installed the iges2step software but it crashes on startup with the message "Fatal Error in units initialisation". I noticed its copyright is from 2003. Maybe there is problem with newer versions of the Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime like the 2005 one installed on my Windows XP Pro laptop.

Hi Al, I took a quick look and saw the same problem. The fix is to reboot your machine, it should then work after you have rebooted.

It needs a couple of environment variables set to work properly, on install the changes to the environment variables don't quite spread out to the entire system, but they will after a reboot.

It's interesting - appears to be based off of the Open CASCADE kernel. It's actually parts of Open CASCADE that need the environment variables set.
