Creating a knife-edge bail for a pendant

Hi All,

I'm trying to design a knife edge bail for a pendant:

I have 2 versions and each has it's own issues.

In this version, after sweeping 2 triangles along a rail, I get this odd chamfering at the bottom on one side:

In the other version, the sweep doesn't seem to flow smoothly along the curve - it seems to create 2 curves along the edge:

Could someone please troubleshoot this for me?

Many thanks in advance!
Gunter

Salut Gunter,

You have corner points on your Sweep curve! which creates shape breaks!

What's more, one of your triangles is not aligned horizontally with the others.

Yes redraw your curve! Better if it's extremities are "tangent" with their previous points!

Hi Zooen,

Thank you, I did a search and found the Delcorners script and that worked!

Gunter,
Be careful, Delcorners isn't always the best solution (well, it all depends on what you're doing). Your curve changes shape with "Delcorners" (you lose your original shape).

I became interested in this problem in 2021. Here's the solution that Michael suggested (link below). This is the method I use; there may be a little deformation, but with practice you'll get a satisfactory result; I'm waiting for a better adapted and more efficient tool from Michael Gibson.

>Hi Zooen, yes currently for that you need to delete the point you don't want and insert a new one. If you want the new one in the exact same spot as the old one you could insert a "point object" (Draw curve > More > pt) at that spot before deleting it so you have a reference to snap on to.

In the future I do want to add in a way to switch from a corner point to smooth point but that is not implemented as of yet, sorry.

- Michael

A somewhat amphigoric proposal! But I think I get the point.

That said, the three control points at the start of Gunter's 1st curve (left) are vertically aligned, as are the last two at the end of the curve. Only the last two on the 2nd curve (right) are not aligned, but that may be his choice and I respect it.

First is cool!

Second is more problematic!

Hi Zooen,

Thanks for the additional input. Some of it went over my head but I think I understand the gist!

Try this
sweep the 2 triangles using the side rails and pick the centre one as a scaling rale
Left side rail is mirrored to right so is adjustable after sweep
